Brussels council news
Minimum tax
Beginning in 1987 Brussels will
have a minimum tax bill of $25,
Brussels council decided last
week.
Clerk-treasurer Hugh Hanly
told council Dec. 8 that the present
system sees the computer firm put
an amount of $25 on all bills and the
staff at the village office going back
and manually changing the figures
tothe proper amount, as low as less
than $5 on small pieces of vacant
land. Because of all the extra work
involved, council agreed to the
minimum charge.

Brussels is now the owner of land
which it will designate for indu

date for the purchase of land from
William Wheeler in the north end
of town was December 10. Council
purchased a parcel of 25 acres.

Brussels has sent a letter to the
Canadian Transport Commission
opposing the abandonment of the
Canadian National Railway line
through the village. Councillor
Neil McDonald said the railway
says it loses money on the line but
the loss is “Due to their own
stupidity. The railway hasn’t been
providing service.’’ He says the
railway has switched to using large
freight cars but most customers
don’t need such big cars.*****
Council agreed to look into
having pins designed and manu
factured in time for the homecom
ing in Brussels in July, 1987.
The Brussels, Morris and Grey
industrial commission is having a
brochure designed to help promote
the communities to potential in
dustrial clients.*****
Donations were given to the
Brussels Horticulture Society
($300), the Belgrave, Blyth and
Brussels School Fair ($50) and the
Brussels Agricultural Society
($250) as well as the Santa Claus
Parade, ($325).*****
Council’s next regular meeting
will be January 5. It is the annual
day-time meeting during which
council will treat village employees
to lunch. On the business agenda
will be the lengthy By-law Number
1, appointing persons to all the
boards and committees of council.
The meeting starts at 11 a.m.
Arthur Bos [left] of RR 3, Blyth was a double winner at the Hallrice 4-H Dairy Calf Club awards night in
Westfield on December 10. Arthur won the Kennairn Farms trophy for the Top Jr. [1985] Calf, as well as
