Brussels council news Minimum tax Beginning in 1987 Brussels will have a minimum tax bill of $25, Brussels council decided last week. Clerk-treasurer Hugh Hanly told council Dec. 8 that the present system sees the computer firm put an amount of $25 on all bills and the staff at the village office going back and manually changing the figures tothe proper amount, as low as less than $5 on small pieces of vacant land. Because of all the extra work involved, council agreed to the minimum charge. ***** Brussels is now the owner of land which it will designate for indu­ strial development. The closing date for the purchase of land from William Wheeler in the north end of town was December 10. Council purchased a parcel of 25 acres. ***** Max Oldfield was named as the Brussels representative on the Wingham and District Hospital Board. Hesucceeds Nancy Exel who resigned last month. ***** Brussels has sent a letter to the Canadian Transport Commission opposing the abandonment of the Canadian National Railway line through the village. Councillor Neil McDonald said the railway says it loses money on the line but the loss is “Due to their own stupidity. The railway hasn’t been providing service.’’ He says the railway has switched to using large freight cars but most customers don’t need such big cars.***** Council agreed to look into having pins designed and manu­ factured in time for the homecom­ ing in Brussels in July, 1987. The Brussels, Morris and Grey industrial commission is having a brochure designed to help promote the communities to potential in­ dustrial clients.***** Donations were given to the Brussels Horticulture Society ($300), the Belgrave, Blyth and Brussels School Fair ($50) and the Brussels Agricultural Society ($250) as well as the Santa Claus Parade, ($325).***** Council’s next regular meeting will be January 5. It is the annual day-time meeting during which council will treat village employees to lunch. On the business agenda will be the lengthy By-law Number 1, appointing persons to all the boards and committees of council. The meeting starts at 11 a.m. Arthur Bos [left] of RR 3, Blyth was a double winner at the Hallrice 4-H Dairy Calf Club awards night in Westfield on December 10. Arthur won the Kennairn Farms trophy for the Top Jr. [1985] Calf, as well as the U.C.O. [Belgrave] trophy as Top Jr. Showman, presented by Doug Cameron of the Co-op.
