The Citizen, 1986-12-17, Page 23THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 17, 1986. PAGE 23. Bly th Novices split in last week's games BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth novices played two more games last week and they gained a split of these games as they won at home against Milver ton but lost on the road in Seaforth. On Wednesday evening they outplayed Milverton and won 6 - 4 although they watched as Milver ton staged a late-game rally to make the score closer than the coaching staff wished. Blyth scored the only goal of the first period as cousins Scott Arthur and Chris Howson teamed togeth er with Chris finally putting the small black disc behind the red goal line. Blyth then went ahead 4-0 in the First ladies curling draw winds up The first draw of the Brussels Ladies Curling Club ended on Tuesday, December 9. There were six teams participating. In first place with 53 pts. was the team of Velma Locking, Grace McNichol, Karen Uhler and Marje Teeft. In second place with 36 pts. was Nora Stephenson, Linda Gin gerich, Jean Veitch and Evelyn Blake. Third place with 34.5 pts. Brussels Atoms second frame as they scored three unansweredgoals. Ryan Chamney was once again the catalyst as he notched two goals with the Hakk- ers twins, Benjie and Shawn, assisting on his first and Jonathan Collins and Jason Rutledge doing some excellent passing to set up his second goal. Brian McNichol scored the other goal of the period as he was set up beautifully by linemates Scott Arthur and Chris Howson. Scott Arthur and Chris Howson teamed up again to open the third period and gave Blyth a 5 - 0 lead as Scott Arthur found the net on this goal. Milverton scored their first goal of the game but less than a minute went to Jo-Ann McDonald, Susan Bondi, Jean Bewley and Bev Stevenson. In fourth place with 29 pts. was the team of Darlene Oldfield, Brenda Linton, Judy Somers and Doris Mitchler. The second draw of the season will start on Tuesday, January 6. Persons who were scheduled to bring lunch for December 16 will bring it on Jan. 6. later Blyth replied with a goal of their own. Detenceman Frederick Datema stopped the puck at the blueline and kicked it to teammate Brian McNichol who was position ed in the slot. Brian once again made no mistake as he increased Blyth’s lead to 6 -1. No doubt, the players felt the game was won but Milverton scored three late goals to not only make the score closer but also add to the grey hair being shown by the coaching staff this year. Never-the-Iess the team hung on for an exciting 6 ■ 4 victory. On Saturday afternoon the team played in Seaforth in a game which saw them play exceptional hockey for most of the game but collapse in the final five minutes and go home on the short end of a 5 - 2 score. This game was an entertaining see-saw contest with end-to-end plays and great goaltending until the blades fell off the Blyth team in the final five minutes. After a scoreless first period, Seaforth opened the scoring in the dying seconds of the second period. However, the line of Brian McNichol, ChrisHowson and Scott Arthur all had a part in the scoring statistics as they took the p uck from the face-off at centre ice into the Seaforth zone to start the third period. It only took 17 seconds, and some fine passing and hustle, as Chris Howson tallied with assists from Brian and Scott. The score stayed tied 1 - 1 until late in the game when the Seaforth offence exploded for four straight goals to demoralize the boys in blue. Small consolation was a Blyth goal by Jason Rutledge with only 11 seconds left in the game. Jason spotted the opening between the goalie ’ s pads and scored a nice goal with assists going to linemates Henry Bos and Ryan Chamney. It was another exceptional game that was much closer than the final 5 - 2 score indicated. The Blyth Novice A-Team has one scheduled game this week.
