Advent candles lit at Duff's Church A Great Walton UCW unit celebrates Christmas The basement of Duff's United Church was decorated in the Christmas Theme bv the losing side of the copper contest for the supper and meeting Wednesday evening, December 10. As everyone arrived Margery Huether played Christmas music at the piano. Twenty-seven sat dow n to a pot luck supper around tables with red and green cloths, with Christmas centre pieces. Christmas Carols were sung with Doreen Hackwell as pianist. Olene Dennis read the Navitv Journey followed by a reading bv Gloria Wilbee. Olene read a poem, “Sermon on Soap". Phyllis Mit­ chell gave a few very interesting articles on the New Versions of Christmas. Offering was received and dedicated. Olene closed the devotions with prayer. Marie Coutts presided for the business. Minutes of last meeting were approved as read by Audrey Hackwell. Roll call was answered by a Christian Symbol. Thank you card w as read by the Houston’s. Doreen Hackwell gave treasurer’s report. The 25th anniversary of the U.C.W. will be held Jan. 11 with a special church service. Heidi McClure and Marie Coutts offered to help as ushers. The ladies were reminded of coming events. All future U.C.W. meetings in the New Year will be evening meetings at 7:30 p.m. January 4 is the installation of U.C.W. officers at the morning service. The annual congregation meeting Sunday evening, Jan. 18 beginning with a pot luck supper. There are eight young people goingtoToc Alpha this Dec. 27-30. The nominating committee brought in the report of the officers for next year. Copper contest leaders for next year are Viola Kirkby and Audrey Hackwell. The gift exchange was in charge of Alice Searle and'Bcrva Watson, followed by a trivia contest conduc­ ted by Viola Kirkby. closing the evening with a familiar Christmas Carol. TheThird Sunday of Advent was observed at Duff’s United Church when Rev. Bonnie Lamble was assisted in lighting the Advent Candles Peace, Hope and Joy by Leanne McDonald, Trish Clark and Amanda Workman. The organist was Elva Wilbee, ushers were Barry Hocgy, Keith Wilbee and Ray Huether. The Youth group went carolling at Callander Nursing Home in Brussels Sunday evening, then on to Blucvale Church for a Christmas party. Family Christmas Eve Service at Bluevale United Church, December 24. at 7:30 p.m. The Sunday School Concert was held Sunday afternoon with a good crowd. Children put on the pro­ gram and Santa arrived to pass out his usual bag of treats. Christmas Gift Idea... Mike Pfeiffer, formerly of Ethel, was a lucky Wintario winner in Thursday night’s draw. He is the son of Otto and Phvllc Pfeiffer. Long-time Auburn resident dies at 87 CATHERINE EDNA JACKSON Catherine Edna Jackson of Auburn passed away Dec. 13, 1986 in the Wingham and District Hospital. She was born Catherine Wagner in Hullett Township 87 years ago. She received her education in the township. She married James Burnett Jackson who predeceased her. She was a member of Auburn United Church. She is survived by one daughter. Margaret, Mrs. Donald Kai of Wingham. She was predeceased by twosisters, Marion and Mar­ guerite and by one brother, Frederick. The funeral service was held from the Tasker Funeral Home, Blyth on Monday, Dec. 15, 1986 with Gary Shuttleworth in charge. Interment was in Ball's Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Wil­ liam Seers, William Craig, Joe Verwey, Elliott Lapp, Maurice Bean and Thomas Cunningham. Kathy Edgar and Rick Hicks were married recently in Stratford. A reception is being held in Kurtzville Friday evening. Carol Jacklin has returned home after being a patient in London Hospital for the past few weeks. Kelly Krauter is wished a speedy recovery; she is a patient in K-W Hospital. An informal Ethel W.I. meeting was held at Pat Keffer’s on Wednesday evening. Pat served a delicious Christinas punch and goodies. Barb Grube had a Christ­ mas quiz. Joan Smith is coming of age this weekend. She will be one year older than Jack Benny.
