Local Women on WI executive Blyth Festival has been holding its winter workshop period last week and this, meaning the village is alive with actors, musicians and directors. Friday night a public reading of the musical ‘ ‘The Girls in the Gang’ ’ was performed at Memorial Hall. Peace Begins With Me was the theme of the 47th Federated Women’s Institute of Ontario (FW10), Guelph Area convention. W.I. members from Wellington, Waterloo, Halton, Perth and Hur­ on counties attended the meeting held at the Knights of Columbus hall at Maryhill. Joan De New, of Hamilton, addressed the 355 members in attendance on the topic of violence in entertainment. The speaker representing Canadians Concern­ ed About Violent Entertainment (C-CAVE)stressed thatone should not be desensitized with violence but be concerned about it. She noted that if a person continually watches violence on TV one’s values become polluted. She urged her audience to write to the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) and members of parlia­ ment not only disapproving of the violence but commending the better shows. A workshop on how to attract new memberswaspresented by Ontario Ministry of Agri culture and Food staff, Joyce Canning, Nancy Schmidt, Nancy Ross and Norma Pevers. They showed how imagining vhe color of a hat worn tells people how to focus their thinking. Presidentof the FWIO, Char­ lotte Johnson gave an update on W.I. liability insurance, FWIO competitions, a Free Trade semi­ nar and the work of the constitution committee. Suggestions were giv­ en for a winter workshop to replace the officers’ conference. In her address she also noted that if you don’t know whereyouaregoing you will end up somewhere else. Helen Moore, president of the Guelph Area spoke on the peace theme stating that members should start by working on the little everyday things at home. The 90th anniversary of the FWIO in 1987 will be held at North Bay July 6 - 8. As part of this anniversary, a scholarship fund of $20,000 was established to allow members to improve their educa­ tion. Also noted was that the W.I. will not be responsible for the W.I. Home at the Agricultural Museum located at Milton but will provide hostesses. A tea towel to mark the 90th anniversary has been design­ ed by the Grey-Bruce district will be on sale.
