The Citizen, 1986-12-10, Page 28PAGE 28. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 10, 1986. Blyth Novices romp to easy win Blyth PeeWees have busy week BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth novice team played two great hockey games last week andtheyskatedaway with some very interesting results. On Wednesday evening they played like a team possessed as they outhustled and completely outplayed an enthusiastic Mitchell team, winning by an 11 - 1 score. The team skated with desire and passed the puck from one player to another as every skater on the team picked up a scoring point. Goals were scored on break aways, goal mouth scrambles, shots from the point, fine passing plays - Blyth scored them every way imaginable. Blyth built a 5 - 0 first period lead before Mitchell scored their only goal of the game. Mitchell had a man in the penalty box when they caught the Blyth defence napping and scored on a breakaway to make the score 5 -1 with only 21 seconds left in the first period. However, Blyth rebounded in the second period with two goals for a 7 - 1 lead and finished the game with four unanswered goals in the third period. Ryan Chamney led the scoring parade, picking up the hat trick while also contributing three as sists. His leftwinger, Henry Bos, added two goals and a very important four assists. The right winger on the line, Jason Rut ledge, also notched a goal while picking up three hard earned assists. Brian McNichol also re corded a hat trick as he put three well-aimed shots behind the Mit chell goalie. Chris Howson scored his goal on a shot off a power play breakaway and also picked up an assist Peter Craig opened the scoring in the game on another patented wrist shot from his defence position while adding an assist on a later goal. Jonathan Collins was another piayer who made some tremendous plays and passes from his defence position as he recorded two unselfish assists. Single assists went to Scott Arthur, who worked the corners well in this game, and defencemen Frederick Datema and Mark Shep herd who played heads-up hockey for the entire game. Once again the goaltending tandem of Chris Lee and Mike deJong played a strong game in the Blyth nets with only one blemish on an otherwise perfect game. The second game of the week was played last Saturday morning as the Blyth novices held off a late game surge and tied the Blyth atoms 5-5.1 am told that the Blyth atoms did not play up to their potential but if a hockey coach had a dollar for every excuse he heard he certainly wouldn’t still be coaching - he would be retired down in the sunny south some where. The Atoms had to come from behind in the final minutes to tie this fiesty novice team who were headed for victory. This was a tremendous game highlighted by players who have tremendous potential. The Blyth novice have two games scheduled this week. To night, Wednesday, December 10 Blyth plays host to Milverton at 7 o’clock. Then on Saturday, Decem ber 13th Blyth travels to Seaforth for a 4 o'clock showdown. First curling draw over The first draw of the Brussels Mixed Curling Club ended on Monday, December 1. His chin came in contact with a skate blade and required eight stitches to close the gash. Wednesday night saw the boys in Mildmay. The game started out very well, with both teams skating hard. Two players for Blyth who stood out from the rest were Tom Cull who showed super defensive skills and Jeff Olson whose good skating and stick handling kept Mildmay on their toes. Both teams were scoreless until midway through the second period when Mildmay scored. They scor ed again at the end of the second period. InthethirdperiodBlyth appeared worn out as Mildmay outskated them and scored three more goals. The game ended in defeat for Blyth 5 - 0. Friday night in Lucknow, was a disaster. Blyth went in an appre hensive mood remembering the rough game they had played with Lucknow Monday night. Blyth was also short several players. All in all the game was rather one sided. Blyth ’ s only goal was scored by Jeff Olson. The referees kept the game under control, but despite Luck now’s many penalties Blyth was unable to score again. The game ended 12-1 for Lucknow. I Fashioned of Christmas tHO Blyth can be pleased with the way their Blyth team showed good sportsmanship. They received very few penalties compared to Lucknow, (two of Lucknow’s being misconduct penalties.) Brussels Novices bury Lucknow The Novice team had an excep tionally good game of hockey in Lucknow on Saturday last week.
