The Citizen, 1986-12-10, Page 21THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 10, 1986. PAGE 21. Bureau wants to make Christmas happier Once again Family and Child ren’s Services of Huron County is operating the Christmas Bureau through a network of volunteer groups and individuals in the County. This centralized service forfamilies began more than 25 years ago to provide consistency and confidentiality to families and to avoid duplication jn services. The Christmas Bureau is oper ated in the five major County towns, Clinton, Exeter, Goderich, Seaforth and Wingham. It is a location where people drop off donations for children and families who may be less fortunate than themselves at Christmas. It is often very difficult for parents to admit that they cannot provide the extras for their children at this special time of the year, and with that in mind we offer them a private confidential service through a local volunteergroup which will help them select a suitable gift and a new piece of clothing for their child. As well, families are offered canned goods and staples along with help for Christmas Dinner. Throughout the year Family and Children’s Services provides wool for volunteers to knit mitts so children can have warm hands on cold winter days. The Christmas Bureau in 1986 is co-ordinated by volunteer Mrs. Pauline Lingard of Grand Bend who oversees the total program and provides consultation for local groups in order that there is some uniformity of service to families in the County. She is assisted by Mrs. Margaret Allan of Clinton who provides volunteer secretarial ser vices which allow us to request donations of both goods and money. Family and Children’s Services also works hard to ensure that everyone who makes a donation is properly acknowledged including providing receipts for income tax purposes. This year the Christmas Bureau will be accepting donations during the week of December 8-13 with times and locations listed in local papers the previous week. Finan cial contributions can be made at any time to Family and Children’s Services, 46 Gloucester Terrace, Goderich, Ontario. N7A 1W7. Our experience has shown us that this is a necessary service that provided help to over 300 families in 1985. As well we hear annually from parents who wish to donate after receiving; or who let us know that while they needed our help last year, this year they are able to provide for their families them selves. The local groups who volunteer to spend many hours managing this project tell us that their reward is the appreciation of moms and dads when they realize that their children will have gifts under the tree on Christmas morning and good things to eat on that very special day. The following groups are mana ging the Huron County Christmas Bureau on behalf of Family and Children’s Services this year: Clinton, Clinton Christian Reform ed Church; Exeter, Exeter Pente costal Church; Goderich, Goderich Lioness Club; Seaforth, Seaforth Opti-Mrs.; Wingham, Salvation Army.
