SAY NO TO DRUGS
BY SARAH ALLAN AND
CHRYSTALCUCKSEY
On December 5, Grades 5 and 6
listened to a presentation on drugs
given by O.P.P. Constable Mar
shall as part of the Values,
Influence and Peers Program
(V.I.P.)
Constable Marshall told the
students about different types of
drugs and the offences involved in
carrying drugs. He also described
how drugs are carried around in the
cities.
The real point of the presenta
tion was to discuss the effect of
drugs and alcohol on the body and
especially on the brain.
MOOTOYOUTOO

BAILEY AND AMBER GELWICK
On December 2, the grade 5 to 6
classes wentto Bob McNeil’s Dairy
farm near Dungannon. We learned
some of the kinds of dairy cattle,
and also about their feeding habits.
Did you know that cows give 110 -
125 glasses of milk a day? The
McNeil’s also have acow that gives
300 glasses a day. This cow needs
special care and attention.
The Huron County and the
Ontario Dairy Princesses were
there to talk to us. At the end of the
presentation, we each got a glass of
milk and a milk sticker.
A GLIMPSE OF RICK HANSON
BY KELLY COOK AND
TAMMI MEDD
Chris Caldwell, a student at
Blyth Public School who has
Cerebral Palsy, had the pleasure of
seeing Rick Hanson in London
when he was passing through on
Nov. 27.
Mr. Hanson is on a world-wide
tour to collect money for spinal
research. Chris was on his way to
the hospital for a regular checkup,
when he noticed a plane flying
overhead with a banner saying,
“We are with you Rick.’’
Christoldusthat Mr. Hanson
travelled through London with a
police escort, followed by other
wheelchair supporters. Chris wit
nessed this from the side of the
road.
The unexpected event was
especially exciting for Chris be
cause he also needs a wheelchair
for mobility.

December is a very busy month
at Brussels School. Everyone is
actively preparing for the Christ
mas concert which will be present
ed on Tuesday, Dec. 16 at 7p.m.
Each class is preparing its own idea
of what Christmas spirit reallv is.
While all this is happening, all
the regular school activities must
also continue. Those regular activi-
ties include something new this
year and two students give their
impressions of the new school
program.
Every Tuesday the Grade seven
students from our school travel by
bus to F. E. Madill Secondary
Schoolfor Industrial Arts class.
Our teacher is Mr. David Martin,
formerly a teacher in Brussels. He
has taught us about safety in the
shop as well as some wood
working. We made articles from
wood such as toys, signs, bowls
and keyracks. We also made key
chains from acrylic plastic. We will
be working with leather next term.
BY DAREN JOHNSTON
Every Wednesday, grade eight
boys and girls travel to Wingham
by bus for either Family Studies or
Industrial Arts. We take one
course for the first half of the year
and the other for the last half. We
leave the school at 10 a.m. and
arrive at the high school at 10:20.

We are back to Brussels at 12:15.
Thesecoursesintroduceus to
new and exciting horizons in
programs we have not previously
had an opportunity to experience. I
found the Family Studies program
areal learning experience. We had
cooking using Canada’s Food
Guide; we also completed a work
apron. We learned about families
and child care. It was a very
enjoyable experience.

BOBBI JO RUTLEDGE
Our feature story from Grade
seven this week concerns, a very
important member of our school’s
support staff; our school mainten
ance man.
George Cousins was formerly
employed at the Cousin’s Cream
ery of Brussels. In 1975 he started
workfor Huron County Baord of
Education. George’s job has many
different forms - mopping floors,
sweeping every day, cutting grass,
blowing snow, maintaining the
furnace, and repairing everything
you can imagine. George says his
job is like most other jobs; that it
has both good and bad points.
The students and teachers at our
school all know that if something
needs George’s attention you just
need to listen and then follow the
sound of keys jingling or his cheery
whistle to find him. He says the
kids are great and we think George
is great too.
