The Citizen, 1986-09-24, Page 24From the Minister's Study THE CITIZEN,WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24T 1986. PAGE. 25. Being faithful to God demands our totai lives BY THE REV. BONNIE LAMBLE MINISTER OFTHE WALTON-BLUEVALE PASTORAL CHARGE Being faithful to God is costly, for God makes demands upon our total lives -- not just how we behave on Sunday morning. The short book of the Bible, Philemon, makes Coffee Break gives mothers chance to study the Two Blyth churches are provid ing facilities for a weekly interde nominational bible study period. Coffee Break Bible Study for ladies and the Story Hour Program for children from three to five years of age are programs designed for the entire community. The Coffee Break Bible Study is held Wednesday mornings at the Blyth United Church at 10 a.m. It’s a time women can set aside to enjoy Blyth United Church news Rev. Ken Bauman based his sermon, Sunday morning at Blyth United Church, on Paul’s letter to Timothy exhorting him to pray especially for the rulers of the area. He stressed that people should always pray for all who are in positions of authority whether they are heads of state or local councillors. it clear that the gospel is not just about holding lofty principles but about acting and living out those principles in our daily lives. The New Testament book Phile mon is actually a letter that Paul wrote to a Christian slave owner named Philemon. The book is not about abolishing slavery in gener- ahotcupofcoffeeortea, bars or cookies, new friendships and a chance to discover what people have always wondered about the Bible. To let mothers relax, the Story Hour Program has been set up at the Blyth Christian Reformed Church. Nursery facilities for babies and toddlers are also available at the church, letting mothers have a worry-free time for themselves. Julie Howson played two trum- petnumbers, “Fairest Lord Je sus” and “God Will Take Care of You”, accompanied by her moth er, Susan. The flowers in the church were in memory of Phyllis Cole. It was announced that the Messenger and Explorer programs would both begin on Wednesday, Sept. 24. al. Slavery was deeply a part of the culture and Paul did not question its existence. But he did believe that Christianity changed the relationship betweel slave and master. As a runaway slave who had robbed his master, Onesimus was deserving of a severe punish ment. Legally his master may have even been able to demand that he The programs are completely free, with the organizers hoping the programs provide chances for new friendships to blossom in both adults and children. For now that Onesimus is also a Christian, he can be trusted to be responsible. Christian belief has recast the relationship into entirely new terms. Butlet’s notforget that those new terms would not be easy to live out. Put yourself into Onesiumus’ sandals. Would you find it easy to return to slavery once you had escaped ? Would you want to return to face the master you had robbed? As Philemon, could you easily forgive a slave who had inconven ienced you by running away and who had robbed you? Wouldyoube able to trust him again or would there always be that nagging doubt that your goods were not safe under his care? It is not easy to live under the demands of faithful service to God. But the rewards are great. Our lives open up to great new possibilities. Our God does not offer us a love that protects and shelters us. Rather our God offers us a love that equips us for all the demands of life. Are you ready to accept the challenge of faithful ness?
