Brussels sports roundup 40 at ' training camp BYLOISMcARTER Minor Sports held their second meeting of the year last Thursday night with 17 people present. They were trying to fill the empty spots on the executive and coaching staff. Thanks to Greg Wilson the president’s chair was filled and Paul Elliott completed the direc­ tor’s vacancy. The travelling teams are still looking for coaches and managers. The Peewee and Atom teams are the only teams with coaches but no managers. The Novice, Bantam and Midget teams are still looking forbothcoachesand managers. The trainees positions are still open. You should be aware that this job does not require you to be on the ice with the players but attend a trainer’s clinic concerning a first aid course which is not a difficult job. If you are interested in helpingout this season contact any of the executive. It will be greatly appreciated. Registration and equipment ex­ change will be held on Oct. 2 and 3. You are asked to bring your equipment to the arena on Thurs­ day night and it will be sold on Friday night. Registration will be for Sprout through Midget in hockey and also ringette. Please register on the above dates. BULLS PRACTISE The Brussels Bulls had four practice sessions last week with approximately 40 players in atten­ dance. Twenty-one of those players were dressed for an exhibition game against Belmont in Wing- ham on Sunday night. Brussels scored the first two goals early in the first period but Belmont came back to tie the score and ended the first period with a 4-3 lead. Each team scored two goals in the second ending the period at 6-5 in Belmont’s favor. Brussels scored two goals then Belmont added two goals inthe see-saw battle early in the second. Brussels added two more goals with the go-ahead goal coming with 1:54 remaining in the game. Belmont scored the tying goal at the 40 second mark in the scramble around the goalie to end the game in a 9-9 tie. Those players dressed for Brus­ sels were: Mitch Braun, Pat Chambers, Brian Campbell, Tim Brown, Rob Cardiff, Jim Dennis, Dave Harding, Stuart Bowman, Kevin Lee, Kevin Johnston, Doug McFarlan, Tim Fritz, Kevin McAr- ter, Terry Pugh, Blake Flett, Troy Elg, Paul Robinson, Ron Strome, Paul Tolton, Doug Taylor, Steve Nicholson. Another squad will be dressed for an exhibition game against the Mitchell Hawks on Tuesday night in Mitchell. It was a chance to try on new hockey equipment as part of the equipment exchange at Blyth Minor Sports hockey registration on Saturday. Here Al Craig helps Jason Badley try socks on for size while Jason's mother, Myrtle watches. Couple celebrates 25th anniversary Congratulations to John and Leona Johnston on their 25th anniversary. A party was held at the Bluevale Community Centre on Friday evening. Mrs. Mildred Gill has had the misfortune to fall and break her ankle. She will be in a cast for up to eight weeks and could do with some cheery visitors. The Ethel and Brussels firemen participated in a ball game in Brussels with Ethel emerging victorious. Brussels hosted a banquet after the game for all the firemen and their families. Gary Earl thanked the Brussels Firemen for their hospitality. Children enjoy ball Children of the area have had an enjoyable time ball playing at the Jeschke park on Monday and Wednesday evenings with Beryl Smith and Lois Hart in charge. Sixty-eight registered for the games. On Sunday afternoon Sept. 14 approximately 100 children and parents attended the picnic and wiener roast. Games started with T-ball, then juniors, and finished with the seniors playing the adults. All enjoyed the lunch of wieners, cake, coffeeandcolddrinks. An extra treat was the popcorn balls made by Beryl. Lois and Beryl deserve the thanks of everyone for their contribution of time and leadership for the young people. Miss Wendy Smith, Calgary, spent the past two weeks visiting her parents Larry and Mrs. Smith, on the tenth concession. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Zimmer, Cleveland, spent several days last week with their cousin, Mrs. Ida Gordon. Recent visitors with Bert and Mrs. van Donkersgoed includ­ ed a friend, Mrs. G. Vermeer, Medicine Hat, a nephew Gerald Hazelaar and a friend Helen Poortman, from Assen, The Neth­ erlands.
