Enrollment in local schools
up slightly over last year
Enrolment in the seven public
schools in The Citizen’s reporting
area is up slightly this year, with a
number of staff transfers from one
school to another, a few new faces,
and several retirements and leaves
of absence. This week the total
enrolment stood at 1,513 up 23
pupils from the June figure of
1.490.
Brussels Public School has a new
principal, Jim Axtmann, who was
transferred from Grey Central
School to replace principal Ken
Scott, who has gone to East
Wawanosh school. Brussels also
has a new teacher, Gabriel Boet-
cher, who replaces Lynne Henry;
Mrs. Henry in turn will teach
Special Resources, replacing
Cheryl Cronin, who has been
transferred to Blyth for Special Ed.
Mrs. Cronin replaces John Kerr
at Brussels, who is now at East
Wawanosh School, along with a
new addition to the Blyth staff,
Mary Buffinga, who will take the
kindergarten class. Enrolment at
Brussels School is at 186, up from
177 last June, while Blyth’s
enrolment has gone from 189 last
spring to 191 now.
Grey Central School at Ethel had
the largest jump in population, 245
in Sept, as compared to 230 in
June. Grey has a new principal,
Rick Whitley, who was transferred
from his position as vice-principal
at Wingham Public School to
replace Mr. Axtmann. An addi
tional teacher. Marlene Starkey,
from Hensail Public School, has
joined the Grey staff to teach a Gr. 3
class, while Kathy Gottfried from
Turnberry P.S. replaces Margaret
Whitmore as Kindergarten teach
er at Grey, where Ms. Whitmore
will now teach music and a Gr. 6
class.
With the loss of the Special
Needs class. East Wawanosh P.S.
has fallen from 192 pupils in June
to 184 now. with twofewer teachers
on staff. Principal Bill Stevenson is
on a year’s leave of absence, while
Gr. 2 teacher Louise Bosman
retired last spring, being replaced
by Jane Wilson. Both Blaire Fisher
and Al Harrison have been trans
ferred from other schools, to
replace Dave Medd and Nancy
Daer, who have also moved on to
other schools. East Wawanosh's
new principal is Ken Scott, from
Brussels P.S.
AtHullettCentral Public School,
teachers Bill Millson and Doug
Riley are on leave of absence, w ith
Dave Higgins coming in from
Colborne P.S. to replace Debbie
Bennettin Gr. 3 while Ms. Bennett
takes over the Gr. 5 class. Last
year’sGr. 5 teacher, Rosemarie
Cooke now has Gr. 6. Hullett’s
enrolmentis at 247, down from 251
last June.
Brookside School has a new
vice-principal, Pat Allen, who will
also teach Gr. 7 for Greg Hazlett,
who has moved ontoGr. 8. Rodney
Culp replaces Dierdre Graham,
who has been promoted to a
newly-created position as Huron
County Art Co-ordinator at the
Board office in Clinton; while
Bonnie Jewitt from Clinton Public
School replaces Claire McDowell
for music and special ed. at
Brookside. Teacher Don Cameron
retired last June. With the largest
enrolment in the district. Brook
side has 383 students now . com
pared to 373 in the spring.
Walton Public School has lost
Barb Elston and Joan Vandendool
to a year's maternity leave, to be
replaced by Joan Clark for Gr. 1
and Gwen Hugill for the kindergar
ten. The smallest school in the poll.
Walton has 79 pupils in Gr. 1-3. up
one from the spring.

Rev. McInnis preaches
last Cranbrook sermon
Rev. Don McInnis preached his
farewell sermon in Knox Church on
Sunday, Aug. 31. Following the
service Mr. and Mrs. McInnis were
presented with gifts by Gary
Morrison, clerk of session on
behalfof the congregation. The
McInnis’s are moving to Alberta.
Mr. and Mrs. Steven Starr,
Geralton, called on Don and Mrs.
Cotton prior to leaving on a six
week trip to Germany.
Wilfred and Mrs. Strickler
returned Sept. 12 from a trip to the
Western Provinces and Alaska.
While in Alberta they called on the
Dick Bradshaw family. They report
very warm weather in Alaska and
many beautiful flowers every
where .
Mrs. IdaGordonishomefrom
two weeks in Listowel Hospital.
Mrs. Don Cotton underwent
surgery in University Hospital,
London on Sept. 2 and is progress
ing favorably.
Mrs. Gordon Engel spent a
couple of days with Mrs. Mac
Engel during the week.
Mr. Oliver Crawford, his brother
Archie and Mrs. Crawford, Shel
burne, visited Don and Mrs.
Cotton. The Archie Crawford’s
were recent winners of
$462,451.60 in an Ontario lottery.
Mrs. Crawford is a niece of Don
Cotton.
Cranbrook Wl honours
former resident
Mrs. Clare Veitch was hostess
for the September meeting of the
Cranbrook Women’s Institute.
The meeting was opened by
president Mrs. John Vanass. An
invitation was received from Ethel
W.I. to their meeting on Sept. 10 at
the Ethel Community Centre at 8
p.m. Susan Mathers will speak on
“History of Women in Law.’’
The Huron County Fall Rally will
be held at Walton Community
Centre, Oct. 6 with registration at
9:30.
Our delegates will be Mrs. Jim
Hart and Mrs. Donald Perrie. Mrs.
Veitch will look after the sale table.
A thank you from Mrs. B. van
Donkersgoed was read, also a
letter from Zehr’s stating $130 has
been realized from $39,000 worth
of tapes.
Guelph Area Convention is
being held in Maryhill on Oct.
23-24 with the theme “Peace
begins with me.” Mrs. Veitch is
the delegate from Cranbrook. Mrs.
Jack Conley will make the quilt
block for the Erland Lee Museum
Home. Mrs. Frank Workman and
Mrs. W. Strickler will look after the
Brussels Fair display to include
five articles depicting 125 yrs. of
the Fall Fair.
Mrs. Jack Conley presented
Mrs. Gordon Engel with a gift as
she has moved to Stratford. A
discussion took place on liability
insurance. Convenors Mrs. Work
man and Mrs. Veitch took over.
Mrs. Veitch conducted a contest
“Guess who you are.” Mrs.
Workman demonstrated three dif
ferent Christmas crafts and these
were made by the members and
donated to the Fall Rally and Area
Convention. Mrs. Hart and Mrs.
Strickler assisted the hostess with
lunch.
