Blyth Inn wins Winthrop tournament The Blyth Inn slopitch team competed in the Winthrop Tourna ment this past weekend and captured the “A” championship. Strong defence and timely hitt ing enabled the team to win four Blyth Pee Wees cap season with championship BY GRANT ELLIOTT On August 13, the Blyth Pee Wee boys had the opportunity to meet and finally play, against Stanley Township. The earlier match had been cancelled and Blyth had not had an opportunity to assess their competition. This game, however, proved to be an uneventual match as Blyth went on to win with a score of 24 to 11. However, at this point, with the Tournament coming up on the August 16 weekend, Blyth had now had an opportunity to play all competitors in the League. On August 16, at 9:00 a.m., Blyth again met Stanley Township in the first game of the Tourna ment. The winner of this game would then advance to the “A” round of the Tournament, and the loser advance to the “B”. A hard fought battle ensued which saw Stanley Township Pee Wee boys play excellent ball, taking the lead 7 to 5 into the final inning. The Blyth boys had their work cut out for them if they were to advance to the “A” round of the tournament. The Blyth boys persevered and were successful in scoring four runs in the bottom of the last inning to take the victory 9 to 7. The pitching was excellent for both team s with Phillip Hubbard and Ben Rathwell going head-to-head for the entire game. This win put Blythinthe “A” championship round robin against Colborne Township and finally Dungannon. The contests between Colborne throughout the summer had been split, each team winning on the oppositions field. It was felt that Colborne would be difficult compe tition. However, some excellent pitching was displayed by Darryl Elliott through seven innings with excellent fielding and defensive play by the entire team and the score at the end of a lopsided game was 19 to 1 for Blyth. Blyth was now to advance against Dungannon in what would turn out to be the series final and a must win game. Dungannon had initially played Goderich Township putting Goderich Township into the “B” round of the tournament and advancing themselves to the “A”. Dungannon then played the Colborne team which saw the Colborne team comeback strong in an attempt to improve their round robin position. However, they were not able to hold on and Dungannon was successful in the late innings of taking the victory away from Colborne Township. The final game was an exciting contest which saw some excellent baseball played by both teams both offensively and defensively. Blyth came on to win the championship match 15 to 8, and thereby taking the Township “A” Championship Trophy. Excellent batting was shown by Troy Chambers, Craig Bauman, Scott Cronin and Phillip Hubbard. Special mention should go to Joel Jenkins, David Hessels and Craig Snell, all of whom had earlier struggled with the bat but finally came on to give timely hits when necessary. One of which was a home run by Joel Jenkins (doing it his way). Blyth Pee Wee boys would like to take this opportunity to thank all the fans who supported them throughouttheyearand special thanks to Tom Cronin for his assistance in helping to coach the boys to a winning season. The officials of the Pee Wee Boys Ball Tournament would like to thank the umpires for a job well done. The Blyth Pee Wee Ball record for 1986 was nine wins, one tie and one loss. straight games.
