172 Brussels residents can expect
another increase in the price of
Hydro, probably. beginning on
February 1.
Clerk Bill King told the Post
that because of increases in the
price Ontario Hydro charges the
Brussels PUC for power, rates to
local customers will have to go
up. Ontario Hydro's price will rise
by slightly more than 30 per cent
and the PUC has applied for •
Brussels council has applied to
the Liquor Licence Board to have
a vote on allowing ideal hotels to
obtain a lounge licence to serve
liquor.
Christmas Greetings to all our

be a joyous one. Good Will ,
Peace On Earth is A Christmas
message. If only that could come
true! If only everyone would
express good will to neighbours
near and far . If only all over this
troubled world everyone would
devote their efforts to peace on
earth, what a wonderful world it
would be.

There are people, we suppose,
who are self centered and
indifferent to the problems of
Others. That, howeVeri is not the
case in our neighbourhood as we
well know. There are the fine
young people next: door who see
that snow is kept clear of our
driveway and walk. Then another`,
more recent resident 'on our
atteet, Scarcely knOwn, who
called to gay that. he "save Our
veranda roof needed to'e
relieved of its load of'ice and
ghow. Would we Ake him to
remove it? He did .just that and
would not accept paptidni for
doing SO. Kind people who do ; 'such things. trial never kpow, lust

permission to raise Brussels rates
by 28 per cent.
Hydro rates were raised 'in the
village only last March.
Increasing costs also mean that
all Brussels residents will receive
their PUC bills monthly, rather
than every two months. At
present commercial hydro users
are billed every month while
residential customers get bi-
monthly PUC bills.
Clerk 'Bill King said that March
14 has been suggested as the date
-but it's tip to the LLB to approve
it. The Brussels Inn asked the
village council to hold a plebiscite
,appreciated. These are only two
examples of such gracious help
that h,as been extended to us.
Thanks folks!

These are the days of that final
scramble of preparations for
Christmas. The last minute rush
to have everything ready for the
holiday season, to welcome family
and friends and to have all the
traditional goodies on hand. But
let us not forget the real
significance of Christmas and
from that find the hope to sustain
us throughout whatever may
come.
"Unto Us Is Born This Day
A Saviour
Christ The Lord".
Reeve-Jck McCutcheon said
goodbye to 12 years involvement
in local government last week, at
the final Brussels council meeting,
for 1976.
The three term reeve, who was
a councillor before he won the
village's highest office, said he
never thought when he started in
local politics that he'd stay
around that long.
He congratulated the two
councillors who were re-elected,
and said they'd be a real asset to
•
on the question, clerk King said.
In order for the lounge question.
to pass, 60 per cent of the voters
who turn out, must vote in favour
of it, according to LLB rules.
A liquor vote in 1966 allowed
Brussels hotels to serve liquor
with meals; while in 1963
women's beverage rooms were
approved and in 1960 men's
beverage rooms got the ok.
Three properties in Grey Town-
ship, which is dry, are being
annexed to Brussels and there
was some talk of having. a vote,
just by the three property owners
to decide whether premises
serving liquor would be allowed
in the new part of Brussels. But
since the entire new area will be
residential, clerk King said the
LLB advised that there would be
no advantage in having a vote
there.
In other business at the
December 14 council meeting,
councillors learned that an agree-
ment giving right of way to the
new arena location has been
signed with three property
owners.
Brussels has once again been
turned down. on its,application for
the 1977.78 council. Reeve
McCutcheon, who was this
year's Huron County warden,
gave the new council his best
wishes and said they should feel
free to call on him if they needed
any help.
A heavy load of wet snow
forced the temporary closing of
old Brussels arena last week,
Brussels council learned at their
meeting last Tuesday night.
Councillors hoped that volun-
teers would offer to help shovel
the snow off the roof so that the
building can re-open.
a LIP grant to complete a history
of the village, councillors heard..
Brussels has been given a fire
siren from the town of Elmira and
it will be put on the fire hall and
tested to see if it can be heard
over a wide area, council decided.
A bylaw setting an impost fee
on buildable, undeveloped lots in
the village was passed.
Council asked clerk King to
investigate a man from Clifford
who is offering his services as a
dog catcher.
A letter was received from Miss
D. McDonald about snow being
pushed on her property by village
snow plows and council planned
to look into the matter.
Glen Smith and Herb .Stretton
are to receive rebates for 1976
garbage collection fees levied
against property. that is vacant.
A first aid course is planned in
January for volunteer firemen,
who will pay their own, fees,
council 'learned. The course,
sponsored ' by the St. John's
Ambulance, is already filled.
Council suggested that clerk
King keep track of all expenses
connected with the 1976
Municipal election in the village
Accepting a position on council
is a responsibility, he said, and
members often have' to "stick
their necks out". The reeve said
he "thanked council for accepting
their responsibility towards the
community."
Retiring councillors and Reeve
Jack McCutcheon stressed that
it's a heavy responsibility, keep-
ing the old building open and
monitoring snow conditions. They
hoped that the new council will be
able to continue to keep the old
arena open for the rest of the
winter, snow. load permitting.
for 'future. reference.
The inaugural meetings and
installations for the new council
and PUC will be held at 11 a.m.
on Monday, January 10, council
decided.
Post Office

Because the post office will be
closed for four days from Friday,
December 24 until Wednesday,
