(Huron-Bruce) called upon the Government to embark upon a concerted programme of energy conservation, waste management and recycling. "Such a programme is vitally important,,and should be initiated without delay", said MrGaunt. "Ontario's industrial production has, in the_ past, been based on our alitiost unlimited supplies of raw materials- and energy. Now we find ourselves at a crossroads: our non-renewable resources are greatly depleted, and other provinces are kalously guarding their own. ."-s, "We have, entel:ed\sa new era: we need new bbjeqives , technology and government policies, otherwise we< shall stagnate industrially, with resultant 'increased. Unemployment, and possibly a mass exodus of our young people. If we continue as we have to date, Ontario will, in another ten or fifteen years, no longer be 'a place to stand'. "Extravagant use.of our energy and natural resources must end. Other countires have- efficient recycling pla ns which recover cellulose fibre, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, glass, synthetic-liquid and gas fuel, soil conditioning compost, yeast, animal food -pellets and mineral wool from garbage and industrial waste. "Energy supply is the key to industrial expansion, job creation and maintenance of our present standard of living. Methanol, on which the Germans were running their cars , prior to the Second Wbrld War, can be produced from garbage, and cars can burn this product with very little adjustment to the carburetor and manifold system. This has great potential for agricultural and industrial use, especially. "The Government should move to end the further utilitzation of land-fill sites for garbage ;, and undertake a firm commitment to a conservation and recycli ng programme. We need recycling plants and a marketing board which will co-ordinate the supply and distribution of reclaimed materials." Remember!
