Ice tips The Red Cross Water Safety Service urges you to carry your own rescue equipment when walking across ice.covered ponds, lakes or streams. A pole carried horizontally can help prevent a complete plunge through.the ice, Or carry a penknife in your pocket. If you fall in, the knife can be driven into the ice to pull yourself out. Or better still - remember when you wore mittens that dangled from cords threaded through the coat sleeves' and behind the neck? When going Out on the ice, fasten six-incq spikes instead of mitten's to the ends of the cord. By driving the spikes alternately into the ice, you can draw yourself forward to safety If you should fall through the ice while skating; don't panic. The Red Cross Water Safety Service offers these tips: Extend- your hands and arms, onto the ice surface before you, Gently kick your legs out behind you to a level position and slide or squirm forward to safety. Do not Stand. Your Concentrated weight can cause the ice to break. If you didn't receive o Pro Hardware Catalog pick Pne up at the sto Also watch for our Gift Catalog to be mailed soon.
