The Brussels Post in the letter
to the editor column on
Wednesday carried an invitation-
from a. group called "Concerned
Brussels Taxpayers" to meet to
discuss the proposed system.
Ian McDonald Called the
meeting to order about nine
o'clock and was named chairman.
Mrs. Ruth Hupfer agreed to act
as secretary.
Mr. McDonald said a group of
citizens concerned that the annual
charge for the system for a 66-foot
frontage of $198.22, was a
"Terrific Charge" had met
at his home November 5. He, said
many people in Brussels already
have adequate systems and- they
Should' not be penalized for, those
who have not.
Mr. McDonald asked the reeve,
Jack McCutcheon, if any other
type of system had been
investigated and if any surveys
had been made of those in the
'village who had adequate systems
and those who did not.
Mr. McCutcheon said no othet
systems had been investigated,
only the proposed system which is
Used in surrounding
iminitipalities. He said there are
smaller systems suitable far a
trailer park, but theSe. wit:Mid not

They are the ones who will suffer
from a prolonged strike and it
seems that little consideration is

The ones who expect to go On to

not, it will not alter the fact that
the .strike may have the result of
students losing a year in their
educational program.

Senior Citizens
Mr. McDonald spoke of the
"very high number.. of senior
citizens who came here to retire,
many own their homes, and this
will put a burden on them they
cannot bear", He said it would be
a very serious error to put the
sewage system across without a
plebiscite.
"I don't believe it should be a
decision of council, ' Mr.
McDonald said, "1 believe the
plebiscite should be at least 51
per cent."
Mr. McDonald spoke of the
Ontario Municipal Board hearing
to be held on December 2 for
those who have objected by letter
to the Board. He said the
concerned group of taxpayers had
contacted the legal firm of
Campbell and Goodall,
Winghain, who would .assist
them at the hearing.
Mr. McCiitcheon said council
would be at the hearing with a
;lawyer. He said an information
meeting had been called for
November 26 for council, the
Maitland Valley . Conservation
Authority officials and Health
Unit with the lawyer so that the
lawyer would be knowledgeable:
"It's hot a closed meeting, I do
not believe` in closed meetings,
but it is an information meeting
for the lawyer," Mt. McCutcheon
explained,
Not 6ttrot
"I really feel it is great for
citizens to be concerned as long
as it is for the coninittnity riot
for personal gain', he said.
Many of the gronp who had
several lots in the village, some of
Which Were vacant, asked far a
break down of the cost of a vacant
lot and Were told:. 66-foot lot at 30
tents- a foot equals $11.80 phiS a.
connection outlet at property line
of 150.62 for an annual total of
$70.4/.
.McCutcheon said this
The Brussels Library was s.
broken into on two nights in
succession last week.
Thursday night entry to the
building was gained by forcing
the front &or. When they .
vacated the premises the front
door was left unlocked and the
back entrance open. The petty
cash box was missing.
Friday night a back ...window
was forced. It appeared that the
culprit was seeking a warm place
in which to spend the nights.
Books seemed undisturbed and
other library property unharmed.
The break-ins were under invest-
igation by the Wingitartt detach-
, ment of the O.P.P.
could be paid off in a lump sum of
$957 at $3.07 per foot for $462.00
plus connection fee of $495.00.
He said a landowner would
recoup this cost when the lot was
sold. "Do you realize the value of
lots that have sewage?" he ,
asked.
Exemption
Mr. McCutcheon said on a
corner lot there was 100 foot
flankage exemption. He
explained that part of the 'cost of
the' systeni was in the trunk lines
required by the miles of streets in
the village.He said a sewage
treatment plant was part of the
system as the lagoon system was
opposed before it got past the
planning board stage.
Mr. McDonald Continued to say
he thought there should be a
plebiscite and if the vote was
against then other systems should
be investigated. He said every lot
should be assessed so that each
ratepayer, would know what he
would be paying. He said, "The
ones who-are polluting should be
paying. Survey the people who
are polluting and let them correct
'their systems."
Proper System,
The reeve said, "1 am willing to
spend my money and your money ,
to put in a proper system, I '
believe we should not only think
in dollats and cents. It is not only
a tax on your land but a service
Mr. McCutcheon -Said! "Who
Will be affected by this ---
someone Who is sitting on a
number of lots. We should be
expanding softie lots tome on the
market."
The reeve said "I 'believe if
enough people are interested we
'could tall A public meeting ...net A
