BRUSSELS
ONTAR IO
Phone rates up 10%
Brussels and area telephone
customers face higher phone bills
this month.
Maitland Teleservices Lilmited
has finally got approval for a ten
percent rate increase from the
Ontario Telephone Service
Commission, OTSC.
The Maitland Teleservices Ltd.
serves Brussels, Blyth and
Auburn and has been seeking a
IS per cent increase for more than
a year.
An MTL official said this is the
!int increase in several years.
This ten p er cent increase
was termed "interim", meaning,
if will be in effect until a further
equest for increased rates is
submitted to the OTSC and
accepted,
H,J.Ross, the local manager
said he couldn't say how great an
increase they asked for or when a
further request for increase will
be submitted.
Mr. Ross said the increase was
demanded because the company
needed more money to function
since, like everything else, costs
have gone up.
He named the cost of
equipment, wages and wires as
some of the items effecting their
costs,
Mr. Ross wouldn't say what the
company's budget was but said
96 per cent of the company is
owned by Bell Canada and the
test by the public,
The last annual meeting was
held in March, in Toronto but the
tate, increase Wasn't discussed,
he said,
When seeking a rate increase of 15 per cent last August President G. B, Newton said the
Phone company's tax ,bill
creased 150 per cent in the past Iwo years. This request *as
turned doWn after local residents
sett in letters of protest to the OTSe,
is spring a meeting was held
in 'russets with local residents so
they Could air their views on a
tale increase.
Mr, Ross said this rate increase
will help. before returning to the
OTSC, the company will have to
have more facts and figures.
It will have to convince the
commission that people are not
getting the service they are
demanding because of lack of
funds.
He said there are pockets of
individual service out in the
country, that can't be supplied at
the moment.

In spite of all the fatalities and
disabling , injuries suffered in
traffic accidents in which drinking
drivers have been involved, ac'
'cording to the Transportation and
Communications Minister, im-
paired drivers are still a problem.
Why do people still take the
chance of killing themselves and
others? Surely the fact that
alcohol and gasoline do not make
a mixture for safety has been
clearly established. If you must
drive do not drink! We are not
implying that the reckless speed-.
sters who hurtle around the
village streets are under the
influence but there is a great deal
of dangerous driving and we
shudder to think of what could
happen here One of these days --
or nights.

Are all Brussels residents, who
have a swimming pool, aware that
the Brussels Council passed a
by-law regulating the fencing of
private swimming pools? If you
do not ktiOw the requirements you
would be wise to check up On
them.

This rate increase which is
effective July 1, will raise the
private home phone rate from
$4.25 to $4.65.
Last year's'' denied request
would have raised it to $4.90. v Both the two-party and the
rural multi-party phones will

phone rate will increase 75 cents

people have received consider-

know enough to express their

The 12th of July has come and
gone with never the sound of fife
and drum in Brussels. The
"Glorious 12th" was celebrated
in Brussels fifty years ago with
hundreds of L.O.L, members and
their "True Blue" ladies march-
ing to the music of fife and drum,
bands. Banners and flags
unfurled stirred gaily in the
breeze while King, Billy, astride
his white horse, led the parade.
The chilly weather of last week
brought moans of anguish froirt
those who heard their oil furnace
clicking merrily along gobbling
up expensive fuel oil in July.
They had hoped that what their
tank held would be sufficient to
warm them. for sortie weeks in the
lato fall. Wishful thinking folkS!

GOING SWIMMING — The lady in the centre of this
photo has quite a job as she accompanies this bus
load of Brussels children who take swimming lessons
in the new pool at Gorrie every day. For many years
Brussels children took lessons at the Lions Pool in
Seaforth but this was discontinued mainly because
bussing costs to.Seaforth were higher. Local Lions
and the Legion support the .swimming lessons.
