The May meeting of the Walton
Unit of the U.C.W. of Duff's
Church was held on Wednesday
evening at the home of Mrs.
Murray Smith.
Mrs. Edna Hackwell opened
the devotions with the Thought
for the month of May. Hymn "For
the Beauty of the Earth" was
sung accompanied by Mrs. Ray
Huether at the piano. Psalm 96
was read in unison, Mrs.
Hackwell gave the meditation on
"The thing which is ,praise and
read an article, "The Touch of
Love" froth the Observer
followed by Mrs. N. Marks
leading in prayer. Hymn, "Come,
let us sing of a wonderful love"

The McKillop Unit of the UCW
of Duff's Church, Walton was
held Wednesday evening at the
home of Mrs. N. McGavin with 15
members and 2 visitors present.
`Mrs. N. Schade was in charge
of devotions opening with "When
1v1,n thers of Salem" and with Mrs.
McGavin as pianist. .Mrs.
Schade read the scripture from
Proverbs 31: .10-31 followed- by
prayer. The offering was taken
by Mrs. M, Hackwell and dedi-
cated by Mrs. Schade. Mrs.
Walker read a poem "Are All the
Children In" followed by a
meditation on "Mothers".
Mrs. McGavin showed slides
on their trip to Venezuela telling
about the country and how the
people live there. "Will Your
Anchor Hold in the Storms of .
Life" was sung. Mrs. Schade
closed with prayer.
Mrs. M. Dennis, president
presided for the business, open-
ing with a poem "Your Friend-
ship Garden". Minutes were
read by Mrs. G. McNichol. Roll
call was answered by "A News
Worthy Mother and Why". Mrs.
M. Hackwell gave the treasurer's
report.
Mrs. M. Dennis closed with
prayer. Lunch was served by
Mrs. Love Sr., Mrs. Love Jr.,
Mrs. McCiatcheon, Mrs. Godkin
and hostess. After lunch a
successful bake sale was
conducted' by Mrs. N. McGavin.
Figures released by the Minis-
try of Transportation and Com-
munications indicate that for the
first time Since 1970 there has
been a 9.4 per cent decrease hi
the number of fatal collisions and
a 10.7 per cent decrease iti the
number of fatalities.
Owing 1974 the number of
fatalities involving bicyclists
declined 34,8 per cent from 69 to
45, while pedestrian deaths were
down 11.8 pet dent froth 346 to
305,

Mrs. Ray Huether introduced
the guest speaker, Mr.
Caircross, a French teacher at
Brussels Public School. He comes
from Capetown, South Africa, has
taught school for 20 years, at
present makes his home in
Toronto where some of his family
live. he spoke on "South Africa,
A Human Problem". A very
interesting discussion followed.
Mrs. William Thamer
conducted the business.. Minutes
were read by Audrey Hackwell.
The roll call was answered by 23
members. A thank-you card was
read from the former Christine
Lee for her shower gifts.
Treasurer's report was given by
Mrs. N. Sholdice. $212.00 was
realized- from the Bakeless
Bazaar.
Walton Unit were reminded of
the 50th Anniversary on. Sunday,
June 8th when they are to'serve at
the noon luncheon following the
morning service. Copper money
is to come in to the General
U.C.W. meeting on May 28th at
the church.
Mrs. Thamer expressed her
thanks to Mrs. Smith for the use
of her home, and closed the
meeting with prayer.
Following the singing of Grace,
lunch was served by Mrs. Nelson
Marks, Mrs. Stewart Humphries,
Mrs. Ray Huether and the
hostess.

Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Godkin of
A Singles' Dance at the Hully
Gully in Varna last Saturday
raised $69.50 for the Ken
Brandon family of Bayfield, who
lost most of their belongings in a
flash fire that destroyed their
home on April 30. The money was
collected with the raffle of a glass
turkey, won by Joe Haskett of
Lucan.
People began arriving at 7:30
for the 9 p.m. dance, which
featured the music of the
"Mozart Melodies". Most of the
175 persons' in attendance who
didn't leave the dance in the early
hours of the morning, were
looking forward to the next one.
"We didn't have as many
people show up as we usually do ,
because Saturday's warm
weather had the farmers out on
said: "These figures are the most
encouraging we've had to date. In
addition, it's the lowest death
rate per 100 million Miles travel-
led over the past 20 years,"
The 1974 statistics show that

Lorna Hodgins). Prior to the
evening they were supper guests
of Mrs. Mary Barr.
We are glad to hear Mrs. Wm.
Blake was able to return to her
home last week, following a few
weeks in Clinton Hospital.

dances regularly, are joined each
time with just as many people
who have never attended a
singles' dance before.
Although registered as a club,
the Singles' don't plan to charge a
membership fee, for fear that the
Club could fall into the hands of
one class of people and alienate
others not in that age group, for
instance, Mrs. Horbanuik said.
