Food specialists at the Ontario Food Council Ministry of Agriculture and Food have developed a recipe whki uses only corn syrup to sweeten it, These Date Nut Squares a re great' to tuck into a lunch box 01 serve at teatime. DATE NUT SQUARES 3 eggs 1 cup corn syrup 1/2 cup corn oil 1/2 tsp. vanilla 1/2 cup walnuts, chopped 2 cups finely chopped pitted dates, washed. 1-1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour 1 tsp. baking powder 1/1 tsp. salt Beat egss well. Add cm syrup, oil and vanilla, bear thoroughly. Add nuts and dates; mix well. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt over date mixture; stir together. Turn into well-greased 9 x 9 x 3/4 inch pan, Bake at 350 degrees. F. until cooked (35 to 40 minutes). When cool, cut into squares. Makes 36 (1-1/2 inch) squares; ;II Syrup specialist appointed Honourable William A. Stewart Minister of Agriculture ,and Food, has announced the appointment of John. Butler as Maple Syrup Extension. Specialist for the Province.. A forestry graduate of the University of Toronto in 1971, . Mr. Butler wrote his thesis on factors affecting .maple sap pro- duction in Ontario. He .e has had extensive experience working with the Ministry of Natural Resources. During 1971 and 1972 he worked as a private land forester with responsibilities 'for farm woodlot and sugar bush management as well as tree planting. During the last few months he has worked with the Lands Division as an interim Property Manager responsible for management of Crown Land acquisitions and properties in the Owen Sound district. For several years Mr. Butler has operated his own small maple syrup bush in the Parry Sound district. Mr. Butler will be based at the Ontario Food Council's head office in Toronto but he will travel extensively throughout Ontario visiting maple syrup producers and others associated with the industry.
