Soil test can correct acidity Increase in soil acidity on your farm can easily be overcome with regular soil tests and correct applications of lime. "Soils naturally become acidic as they get older, and with the addition of lime, they can be made neutral or basic again," says R.M. Johnston, soils and fertilizers specialist at the Ridge- town College of Agricultural Technology. However, this calls for regular soil testing to determine PH acidity levels. Some soils are low in calcium and magnesium - and therefore acidic - right from the beginning, and eventually all soils become more acidic by leaching, the removal of Minerals from soil by water. In addition, all plant roots produce acid as they grow, and some natural vegetation and any decomposing organic matter from acid. Although soils become acidic naturally, man contributes to their imbalance, speeding the formation of acid by planting crops that remove calcium and magnesium and by using fer- tilizers. Nearly all fertilizers, especially nitrogen fertilizers, are ultimately acid-forming. Even the addition of organic matter to the soil accelerates decomposition and increases acid amounts. County and district agricultural offices have soil testing kits and information. Once a farmer knows his soil's PH level, he and the soils specialist at his county or district Ontario Ministry of Agri- culture and Food office can decide how much calcitic or dolomitic lime is needed.' Supplements balance beef feed By using supplements to ensure carefully balanced rations, beef cattle producers can improve both production and weight gain, according to Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food specialist R.E.Macartney, "A drop of even one-half per cent in protein means a 500 to 600 pound calf is receiving one tenth of a pound less protein per day, with a correspondingly less efficient weight gain," says Mr. Macartney. "As a result, the cattle need that . much more supplement to bring them up to proper levels." The specialist suggests that farmers who suspect a feeding problem in their cattle submit a feed sample to the Feed Testing Laboratory to find out the protein and mineral levels of their feed so they can be supplemented to the correct level. The livestock specialists at county and district offices of the Ontario Minist ry of Agriculture and Food are also available to provide help in balancing rations so that pro- ducers can get the Most benefit from their feedstuffs. ;411e.i• i60166 Lim6i *limo dmmini I USE I 1, POS T I WANT-ADS DIAL 887-0641 12—THE BRUSSELS POST, HEAVY-DUTY TRACTOR MUFFLERS Aluminized steel replacement mufflers have the strength of steel, the corrosion resistance of aluminum and high temperature durability unmatched by either material, Replacements for Allis Chalmers, Case, Cockshutt, David Brown, John Deere, Ford, International, Massey Ferguson and Oliver, —Massey Ferguson 165, 175, 180 Gas and Clete —Cockshutt CO.4 1750, 1800, 1850 Gas and Diesel. —International IN-10, 300, H, Super-M.
