Depression is a word we're
hearing with increasing
frequency these days -- mainly in
connection with the economy and
the depths it may or may not be
sinking to.
Medically speaking, depression
also means a downturn. A low
feeling.
Everyone becomes depressed
at one time or another, and it is
entirely natural to do so. When
the "blues" go. on too long,
though, they affect a person's
work or social function. When
they create a continuing sense of
helplessness or hoplessnessi; it's
time to seek help.
Many things can lead to
depression: loneliness, bereave-
ment, financial or employment
worries and marital difficulties.
The early sign s, says Dr.
HarveyStancer -- head of clinical
investigation at Toronto's Clarke
Institute of Psychiatry and pro,
fessor of psychiatric research at
the University of Toronto -- may
be lack of sleep, decrease in
appetite and weight and a slow-
down in mental function.
The problem, Dr. Stancer says,
is that we don't really know what
actually triggers depression in
some people and not in others —
why certain people can cope with
depressing events while others
can't, Some of this ability or
inability he suggests, may have to
do with heredity,
Also, since depressed people
May successfully hide their
depression behind a facade of-
of Kitchener and Mr, Ted Weyers
Sr, of Listowel and Mrs, Sam.
Hiemstra of Listowel all visited

VVilbee and also her son Ken.
Mrs, Ken Wilbee is visiting
with her daughter and son-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. Howard Giles of
Petrolia.
Mr. and Mrs. Stan Alexander

Douglas of Donegal.
• Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Keifer
visited with Mr. and Mrs.
Howard Turner of Ayr through
the week.
The Ethel W.I. was held at the
home of Mrs. Stan Alexander
when the roll call was answered
by "What improvement I
would like to see in the
community". Mrs. Wm. Dobson
took charge of the meeting. Mrs.
Geo. Heirnstra gave the topic
"Vacant lots and vacant minds
usually become dumping grounds
for all sorts of rubbish". Mrs.
Stan Alexander showed slides on
her different trips. Mrs.Chester
Earl gave the smile. Mrs. Ed. Gill
took charge of business.
TheCancer drive will begin first of
April, headed by the W.I. leader,
Mrs. Cliff Bray.

forced joviality or frenetic talking,
working or driving, it's not always
easy . to detect. And so the
solution lies in the individual
being honest with himself:
recognizing his own depression
early enough -- and seeking
treatment.
Fortunately, tfiere are many
successful ways of dealing with
the problem medically. .AMong
them are counselling sessions
with your family. physician in a
joint effort to get to the root of the
trouble: The anti-depressant
drugs, introduced in the 1950's,
have helped many sufferers
greatly. And there's the so-called
shock treatment.
This last, says Dr.. Stacer, is
particularly successful ,in extreme
cases. But it. may well be badly
named, . he thinks, because
today's version of the treatment
doesn't itidtite wide-awake con-
vulsions; rather, it is done Under
a general anesthetic. You may
recall that Senator Thomas Eagle-
George.. McGovern's presi-
dential running Mate in the 1968
. elections, had undergone
shock treatment — with petsotial
success if not with public ,undet-
Standing.
While untreated depression is
perhaps the major cause of
suicide; it is also very etittirriOri in
its less serious forms. With
people, as .with ecotioniies; the
trick is to realize 'when it has gone
on for too long and to take- the
appropriate steps to reverse
feelings of depression.,

has included many new tax benefits that
are important to you because they could
save you money.
Your federal income Tax Guide
explains them thoroughly.
Let's take the Interest Income
Deduction as an example. ThiS year for the
first time, if you received and reported on
your income tax form interest income from
many legitimate Canadian sources,
including bank deposits, bonds, mortgages
and notes, you are allowed to claim as a
deduction the total of the amounts up to
$1,000.
Your Tax Guide explains it in detail.
Check Item 35,
Increased Personal Exemptions is
another item that has changed from last
year. All it means is that the Federal
Government has increased your personal
exemptions to coincide with-the rise in the
Consumer Price Index. The new personal
exemptions are printed on your income tax
form. Guide Item 41 tells you more about it.
Well, those are just some of the areas
where it pays to follow your Tax Guide and,
