Mother defends Guide leader
To the editor:
As a concerned mother, I think it is a
disgrace for someone who' has given 24
years plus of her life to Guiding to be
thrown out like a wet rag.
Mrs. Kellington has spent many, many
hours of preparation of material, attending
out of town meetings and finally for
approximately 240 months (moi-e or less)
was tied down, knowing she was unable to
make any personal plans of her own.
It has been mentioned that her teaching
methods are outdated - Do years of
experience mean nothing? Sure there are
new ideas, but have they proven their
worth, Are they not so much better to be
learning from a person with experience;
than having no interest in the community
and end up running the streets, getting
into trouble?
Why should ,newcomers to the
community simply walk in and start
cleaning house. Try looking under your
own mat before you find everyone else's
mistake.
A Concerned Mother
Mrs. Leo Deitner
To the Editor:
There are letters filled with enjoyable
praise for those who earn it; and there are
so many letters filled with unfair
One such letter was received by Mrs. Gert
Kellington, whom for 25 years has served
our community with respect, consideration
and absolute justice. However, certain
unqualified, obStinate individuals of
Brussels, aim to destroy her self respect by
some falsehoods about deteriorating. ser-
vices to her Gill Guide Company.
Knowing Gert Kellington for 22 years,
working under.ber supervision as a Guider,
teaching other Guides beside her,' and
finally achieving my Gold Cord,I feel
highly responsible to her not just as an old.
Guider but as a trusted, sincere
friend. Although I am no longer involved in
Girl Guides, I feel that 10 years of working
with her has proven to me that she
sdeserves no abuse or instilts that some
people wish to accomplish by intruding
their own personal reasons for disliking her
as an individual. because. of perhaps every
day events occurring daily in the village. I
feel everyone has his or her right to voice,
their opinion when assured they are in the •
right or are sure of all the details.Again,
repeat there are so 'many in Brussels who
can sit back and constantly. find fault with
absolutely everything that, one person
strives so well to do. Yet when, it comes
right down to the nifty gritty of life, who is
responsible enough to take on ' life's
awaiting achievements and fulfill them to
their own child's advantage or to someone
else's?
Criticism plays an important part
growing up and learning how to accept
life's misfortunes, However, when one is
constantly harrassed by ignorant indivi,
duals who have never taken time to be
responsible enough to accept the problems
that do arise while teaching a group of
youngsters, should they have the right to
hurt someone else who has strived so hard
to do her best? I say no one has that right
to deliverately crush someone because they
are frankly jealous that she .has a certain
ambition that no matter how long they
struggle, they will never be able to
accomplish.
To ere is human. I'm not saying that
Gert Kellington is some kind of God we all
should idolize. What I am saying is why all
of a sudden after 25 years of teaching Girl
Guides that she has not got the ability to
continue on and why are a few people
finding, fault with her now after 25 years of
devoted service?
Why do some people hate to give credit
where credit is due? And why do some
people hate to admit they are wrong and
that she did do a good job despite all the
help she got and the thanks.
Gert gave the Girl Guides of Brussels a
long time of her life. In that time she was
faced with continuing the leadership of the
Guides, finding new leader and guiders
• .and finding the time to fulfill their needs. I
ask each and everyone of you, how many
parents or mothers would take the time, let
alone the expense and know hoW to go to
camp with the girls year after year, so they
could advance forward? How many of you
could stand the strain and the responsi-
bility? The answer is quite clear by the
' letter she received. • -
I think the most degrading fact: about
this whole matter is to think that the
individuals who sent letters to the
Commissioner of our area, saying that Gert
was not capable of leading the Guides
anymore, didn't have the decency to come
to her face and speak their differences.
In all due respect, I think it's outrageous
that Gert should be treated this way after
all her devotion to the Girl Guide Pack,
when so many other mothers and parents
refused to help her. She deserves more
than a slap in the face. I think it is high
time .that the citizens of Brussels realized
what kind of a thankless job she undertoof
and,how an unorganized, rude clique cat
ruin the self respect of one individual b:
some ugly insults and a bity of stupidity at
their own part.
I will gladly advise each of you how hail
Gert worked, becauSe you see I was there,
That's more than a lot of you can say.
