Burn logs
for extra heat
The snap of logs 'burning in a
fireplace is no longer just the
glowing comfort it once was. With
higher costs for heating fuels,
homeowners are more likely to
consider logs as an additional
source of heat for their homes,
according to Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food marketing
specialist, R.H.Cobbledick.
"Wood is a good fuel when it
has been seasoned for six to eight
months and is burned in - an•
efficient unit," he says. "And '
just as important as seasoning is
the species of wood." Generally.
the heavier the type of wood
which indicates its density, t'
more heat available per log.
Those living in rural areas
often lucky enough to have woo,
on their farms and lots, or find a
neighbor willing to sell some.
Others may find that some of the
larger roadside markets have
wood for sale. The common
marketing measurement of wood
is the "cord", a unit 4 by 4 by. 8
feet.
Ontario has , a number of
varieties very suitable for
firewood. &cord of well-seasoned
sugar maple, for example, will
provide the equivalent heat value
of 5/6 ton of anthracite coal or 129
gallons of No. 2 home heating
fuel. The heat value of green
(unseasoned) wood is
approximately 5 percent less than
the same wood after it has been
air dried.
Large amounts of wood shotild
be protected from the weather
either by piling under a roofed
area or covering with a heavy
plastic Sheet.
"However you buy your wood,
Make mire it's dry and kept dry,
so that you tan enjoy
fireplace and help cut down y
our
Our
diking costs," Mr. Cobbledick
says.
