A new edition of the "Century
Farm" sign is appearing on
farms across Ontario, thanks
to the efforts pf the Junior
Farmers' Association of On-
tario. Revival of the "Century
Farm" project grew from the
need to replace the original
signs first issued in 1967,
as well as from interested
farmers whose homesteads
have since reached that cen-
tennial age. The signs, which
designate farms that have been
operated by the same family
for 100 years or more, will
be available to qualifying
farms on a cost basis through
local Junior Farmers.

Pet owners take heed! Before
leaving Canada with Fido or Puff
make sure you check all the
regulations or your pet may have
to remain in quarantine when you
return.
The same applies if you
purchase a pet abroad and want
to bring it home.
"Regulations, for the protection
of animals and people govern the
importation or re-entry of any
animal into Canada," says Dr. A.
E. Lewis, director of Agriculture
Canadas Contagious Diseases
Division. "In the case of dogs, the
regulations are enforced to
prevent the spread of rabies, " he
says.
Dogs from the United States
must have been vaccinated
against rabies within 12 months
of entering. Canada. Puppies from
the U.S. under three months of
age are exempt from vaccination
requirements.
Dogs originating in or
returning directly from rabies -
free countries are not subject to
quarantine or vaccination --
provided they travel with a
certificate stating rabies has not
existed for the past six .months in
the country the3;re leaving. A
veterinarian from the country of
origin must also certify that to the
best of his knowledge the dog has
been in that country for the
preceding six months and has
been inspected and found free
from any symptoms of contagious
disease. The Contagious Diseases
Division maintains a list of
countries considered to be free of
rabies.
On the other hand, dogs
entering Canada from countries
not officially recognized as free
from rabies must be vaccinated
and quarantined for one menth.
A government quarantine
station is located at Levis, Que..
but special arrangements can be
Made to qttarantine dogs at an
ht:tpital, clog kennel or
Other premises approved by
Agriculture Canada's veterinary
director general:
Privat e homes may be
acceptable, as long as they are
inspected and approved,
"But no matter what
4—THE BRUSSELS POST,
arrangements are agreed upon,
the animals must be kept at the
owner's or importer's expense,"
Dr. Lewis adds.
There are a few exceptions to
the rule. The vaccination and
quarantine requirements do not
apply to seeing-eye dogs or to
dogs specially trained for public
entertainment which stay only
temporarily.
Importation of other pets comes
under the Animal Contagious
Diseases Act as well.
"In the case of birds, we are
mainly concerned about the
introduction of exotic Newcastle
disease, which can be a serious
disease of domestic poultry," Dr.
Lewis says.
Birds must have import permits
and must be quarantined upon
arrival in Canada.
Creepy crawlers such as lizards
and other reptiles must also be
accompanied by an import
permit.
Dr. Lewis says that generally
speaking there are no quarantine
controls for reptiles but they must
be inspected on arrival.
Reptiles may not be your idea
of a pet, but perhaps a nice warm
cheetah is. The same rules apply,
You need an import permit for
such exotic pets, unless they are
coming from the United States.
The import permit states the
conditions under which these
animals may be brought into the
country. If there is a serious
disease risk, the permit may be
refused.
But theres one pet that stands
above them all for unhindered
travel -- the domestic cat.
Cats may be imported into
Canada from anywhere in the
world without restrictions. They
are subject only to veterinary
inspection on entry and, if found
healthy, they are immediately
released to the Owner or iniporter.
"This is because to date we
have had no problems with cat s
when it comes to rabies Control,'
Dt. Lewis eXplains.
So if you plan to travel With
your pet or would like to import a
pet, remember that in Canada
these are the import
requireirientS.
