story. This was evidenced
by the large choir made up of
persons from all corners of the
parish.
The parish of St. John's
Church, was founded. in 1860,
when 'the local congregation
worshipped in the Orange Hall ,
until the first church building was
built in 1864. This• buildifig was
in use until 1876 when a larger
church was opened. This Was
later consecrated by Bishop
Baldwin in 1894.
On February 25, 1947, tragedy
struck St. John's when fire
destroyed the building leaving.
Only one wall and the tower
standing. For over two years the
congregation was without its own
building in which to worship, but.
the United. Church graciously
offered its facilities to the
Anglicans during this interim
period. The Rector, the Rev. J.
H. Kerr, held services in the
United. Church until July 10,
VICTOR L.M. SHAW
Victor L.M. Shaw passed away
in the Pinecrest Manor Nursing
Home, Lucknow on Thursday,
October 31st in his 79th year.
Born in Rousseau Ontario,
September 2nd, 1896. He served
with the 162nd Battalion of the
Canadian Arni'y overseas during
World War 1. He was discharged
November 1917 with the rank of
Corporal and returned to Rosseau
where he worked as a tourist
guide for a number of years.
In the early forties he moved to
the village of Walton with his
mother. After her death in 1954
he moved to Brussels and resided
at the New American Hotel until
August 1973 when due to failing
health he entered Wingham
Hospital and later Pinecrest
Manor.
He is survived by two brothers,
Clarence Shaw and Cecil Shaw
both of Rosseau, Ontaric; and
several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held
'from the M.L. Watts Funeral
Home, Saturday, November 2nd
with Rev. E. LeDrew of .Brussels
United Church; also Padre of the
1949,when St. John's was re-
opened and dedicated by the Rt.
Rev. George N. Luxton, Bishop of
Huron.
Although this year marks the
twenty-fifth anniversary of the
re-opening of the present church
building, St. John's has, in spite
of the difficulties through the
years, been a continuous
reminder to the community of
God's glorious power and magni-
ficent love for 114 years.

Pallbearers were Herb.
Traviss, Ralph Traviss, Stewart
Humphries, Jack Brewer, Tom
Garniss and Ross Bennett.
Flower Bearers were Ross
Duncan and Frank Rutledge.
MRS, B. W. MILLER
Mrs. B. W. Miller of 455 Elma
St. E., Listowel, died October 18
in Listowel Memorial Hospital.
She was 90 years old.
The former Pearl Embury, she
was born Aug. 5, 1884 in Morris
Township. She was the daughter
of the late Mr. & Mrs. Fraser
(Elizabeth Bell) Embury..
Two husbands, Thomas G.
Mills and B.W. Miller, both
predeceased Mrs. Miller. •
She resided in Grey Township
for a number of years before
moving to Manitoba and later to
Listowel.
Surviving are one son, Earl
Mills of Listowel; two daughters,
Mrs. Melvyn (Reta) Marks of
Listowel and Mrs. Orval (Leola)
Harrison also of Listowel; four
grandchildren and five great-
grandchildren. She was also
predeceased by one brother and
one sister.
The body rested at the Robert
Trench Funeral Home, 385 Main
St. W. Listowel where the funeral
was held on Monday, Oct. 21 at 2
p.m. Rev. Rea Grant of Calvary
United Church assisted by
student mi. nister David Hine of
Trowbridge United Church,
conducted the service. Burial was
in Elma Centre Cemetery.
Pallbearers were' Frank
Gordon, Louis Dittmer, Allan
Johnston, Art Bowman, Roy
McCreight and Reg Tompkins.
