Good Citizenship
deserves a medal
Do you know anyone here in Ontario who—through
selflessness, humanity and kindness without expect-
ing anything in return—has made this a better
province in which to live?
That's the kind of person.for whom the Ontario
Medal for Good Citizenship was established.
Recipients are selected by an independent.
Advisory Council of Ontario citizens whose honorary
chairman is the Lieutenant-Governor of the Province.
Anyone may nominate a person for the Ontario
Medal, and nomination forms are available by
writing:
Executive Secretary

Ontario Medal for Good Citizenship
Queen's Park
Toronto, Ontario M7A 1P4
Making a nomination is itself an act of appre-
ciation for good citizenship.

for feeder cattle a cow slaughter
will take place to such an extent
we will be scarce of beef in the „
next two or three years. For that
reason, Mr. Stewart has rejected
an Ontario Federation of Agricul-
ture proposal that the Province
pay a subsidy of $100 per cow to
every farmer who agrees to.
reduce his herd by 20 per cent.
A broad programme for the
treatment and recycling of
garbage was outlined by the
Minister of the Environment Mr.
Bill Newman, and he also
announced plans for an Ontario
waste management board. He
intends to continue experiments
such • as -the garbage burning
Watts from Waste using garbage
as fuel in Ontario Hydro's Lake-
view generating station.
The Provincial Government is
establishing a 15,year programme
to reduce urban reliance of
land-fill sites, and the first phase
of, the 500 .million dollar pro-
gramme will be to build a number
of garbage recycling and
processing plants throughout the
Province. As the first stage -the
Province is going to provide 17
million dollars to construct six
such plants in Kingston,
Sudbury, Peel-Halton, L6ndon,
Metro Toronto, and the Peel and
Metro Toronto areas. The
reclamation material mainly
metal and paper will be resold to
offset operating costs, the rest
will be shredded and compacted
before delivery to a land-fill site.
The process is designed 'to reduce
the garbage by 40 per cent in
volume.
You may remember that prior
to the last Provincial Election 1
tabled a bill on non-returnable
containers, and hopefully thks
whole matter will be resumed
when the Minister's plans are
fully debated in the HoiAe.
In January, 1973; James Auld,
then Environment Minister, set
up a solid waste task force in
which he wanted to discourage
the use of throw-away beverage
containers. Mr. Newman said
that the final report may be tabled
"in ensuing weeks".
