Fire Drill
Around the middle of
September we had two fire drills. ,
These were false alarms to put us
in good practice for a real fire
drill. (Though we hope this
situation will not arise.) There
will be three fire drills each term.
Mr Robertson was pleased that
the students responded so rapidly
in the first two and hopes to see
equal consideration in the
following drills.
Fund Raising in Room15
Room 15 is selling hotdogs for
their trip to Ottawa with Room 13.
Room 15 sells the delicious
hotdogs to a different group of
rooms in the school each week.
They will probably be leaving
sometime in May, 1975. I think
that everyone has really enjoyed
the hotdogs, at least, the money
is coming in rapidly." Miss Amos
(Room 15) and Mr. Doubleday
Mom 13) are searching for a
suitable plan for the tour through
Ottawa.
Now on display in Howick
Mis McKinnon, the librarian at
Howick Central School has kindly
offered the use of the libt'ary for
the purpose of displaying all the
awards and prizes won at the
Howick Fall Fair held at the new
Community Centre, This will be
open to all students and it begins
next week. On display will be
science, health, social studies,
and math work books, arts and
crafts, etc,
She is doing this for the benefit
of all students with the hope that
they will find time to go and see
it...

Doctors still don't know what
i causes cystic fibrosis, but they're
making progress in controlling
this idsease, once nearly always
fatal.
At Toronto's Hospital for Sick
Children, for instance, the infant-
mortality rate has dropped frdm
75 per cent 16 years ago to less
than one-half of one per cent
today.
Even so, cystic fibrosis is still
the commonest lethal hereditary
disease. In Canada, one in every
1,800 newborn babies has it -- and
its incidence is rising.
While there's no outright cure
for this baffling disease, earlier
diagnosis and more intensive
treatment are bringing some
measure of relief to the children,
adolescents and young adults who
suffer from it.
Formerly, CF was loosely
diagnosed as bronchopneumonia
or as malabsorption syndrome --
b ut really it's much more
complex than either: Basically,
cystic fibrosis is a failure of the
mucus-producing glands. The. CF
patients mucus is gluey and
tends to clog the pancreas and
lungs.
Blockage of the pancreas , left
untreated, can lead to chronic or
even fatal malnutrition, because
no matter how much food is eaten
the patient can't absorb it into the
system.
'Treatment consists of enzyme
capsules -- up to 150 a day in
some cases -- to help the body
break down protein, fat and
carbohydrates and absorb them.
Huge amounts of drugs are also
used to restore the breathing
function in the mucus-blocked
lungs, and inhalation thereapy is
required to help CF patients
