Qualifying residents
65 or older should now have
at least $2700 a year.
This is what Ontario is doing
to guarantee that income.
Your Ontario Government believes senior
citizens should now have a guaranteed
annual income of $2700 a year for single
persons, and where both spouses qualify,
$5400 for married couples.
So, if you are 65 or older, with an
income of less than $2700 a year...and
have lived in Canada for at least the past
5 years and in Ontario for the last year...
you may qualify for GAINS.
GAINS is Ontario's Guaranteed Annual
Income System. It is designed to ensure
an annual income of $2700 by making up
the difference betWeen the GAINS
guarantee and income from other sources.
Over 260,000 senior citizens are now
receiving benefits under this program.
If you receive Old Age Security and the
Guaranteed Income Supplement, your
eligibility for Ontario GAINS is determined
automatically. You do not 'have to apply.
If you are not receiving GAINS pay-
ments but feel you may qualify, please give
us a call.
Blind and disabled people now receiving
assistance from Ontario's Family Benefits
program 'are also entitled to GAINS..

Meat won't taste
Animal, Wastes may be used as livestock prof
Animal wastes, although not
cleared for sale as a feedstuff in
Canada, could be used as a
protein supplement for livestock.
"But only cattle and sheep,
which are ruminants, are able to
use large amounts of animal
waste in their diets," says Ralph
McQueen, an animal nutritionist
at Agriculture Canada's Research
Station here.
"The bacteria and end-up
products of, protein digestion in
animal waste can replace conven-
tional protein , supplements in
steer rations," he says.
Animals such as chickens and
pigs require most of their
nitrogen in the form of protein,
such as in soybean meal: They
don't perform well on animal
waste products because as much
as 50 percent of the nitrogen may
be in the form of non-protein
nitrogen, Dr. McQueen says.
"Nitrogen can be supplied to
ruminants more economically as
non-protein nitrogen," he says.

What are
sensitive
teeth ?
If the simple act of biting into a
chocolate bar • causes you to
twinge (or cringe) in pain, and yet
you know you have no cavities, it
is more than likely that you have
one or more "hypersensitive
teeth."
It is a 'problem experienced by
virtually everyone at one time or
another, and adults over 35 years
of age are particularly
susceptible. This is when the
gums start to recede and portions
of the teeth normally covered and
insulated by gum tissues become
exposed.
Without this protective
covering, teeth react with pain to
stimuli that previously were
pleasant, or, not felt at all. This
pain may occur in all or only somc
of the teeth, and may be regular
or intermittent.
Pain can be brought on by hot
or cold, food with a high
sugar-content, or brushing the
teeth after a dentist has cleaned
them. Dental surgery or contact
with dental instruments may also
set off hypersensitive teeth.
Until a few years ago there was
little that could be done for this
condition that did not entail
considerable time and money, as
'well as the risk of irritation and
tooth discoloration.
"The ideal solution to the
problem of hypersensitivity,"
writes Montreal dentist', Dr.
H,Skurnik in The Journal of
Periodontology, "would be a
preparation that could be used in
the normal activities of good
home hygiene as a supplement to
office care."

Prop. WAYNE GRUBS
have been going on for at least 10
years. Experiments have shown
that feeding animal waste does
not affect the taste or quality of
the meat, he says.
"The ranking in order of their
apparent nutritional value of
types of animal waste is manure
from caged poultry (the highest),
beef feedlot manure, poultry
litter, swine manure and dairy
cattle manure, according to U.S.
research scientists," he says.
Manure is not sold as feed in
Canada because of the concern
about the carry-over of drug
residues and ,antibiotics,
especially in poultry waste, Dr.
McQueen explains.
Poultry litter, containing wood
shavings, is made more palatable
to cattle and sheep by drying it
first to remove excess ammonia.
Drying also conserves the nitro-
gen in the litter by preventing
excessive bacterial and fungal
growth.
"Rations of two-thirds poultry
litter and one-third corn silage
have been successfully fed," Dr.
McQueen says.
"As much as 80 percent poultry
litter was fed to beef cows in
Maine. Usually at such high
levels feed intake will be reduced.
"This is acceptable since a beef
cow's winter ration can be quite
low in energy, but supplementary
grain may be necessary after
calving."
He also suggests grinding the
litter in a hammermill equipped
with a magnet to remove glass
and metal such as nails or wire.
Grinding also makes the litter
easier to mix with other ration
ingredients.
"Ensiling is an alternative to
drying poultry litter or feedlot
manure. Poultry litter silage has
been successfully fed to beef
steers from 400 pounds to market
weight."
In this instance, broiler litter
