for summer
The fourth annual summer tour
of the Ontario Maple Syrup.
Producers Association WaslIeld in
the Huron County area on Friday
and Saturday, July 26. & 27.
Producers from across Ontario
gathered at Albert Schilbe's
maple bush in Goderich
Township, north of Bayficld, at
noon on Friday for registration.
Mr. Schilbe explained his modern
set-up and answered questions on
his methods' of tapping.
Next on the tour was Gordon
Westiake's syrup camp , south of
Bayfield in Stanley Township,
where the Department of Lands
and Forest are working with him,
on Woodlot Management.

The tour moved south to the
camp of . Charles Corbett at
Brinsley where 2000 taps are on
dry vacuum and the sap is
processed in an oil - fired
evaporator.
The producers gathered at
Centralia for a chicken barbecue
banquet and square dancing with
caller Mac Marcellus of Barrie,
Many producers and their wives
were billeted at the College
overnight.
The tour resumed on Saturday
morning after br eakfast at the
College and stopped at Dave
McCallum's camp north-cast of

leader of -Belmore 4-H Maple
Syrup Club - the only one of its
kind in Ont ario.
The final stop of the tour was at
Belmore Maple Products at
Belmore, operated by Walter
Renwick. This was the first
central plant in Ontario and the
Renwicks buy sap from
surrounding farmers. They have
ihree large oil refined evaporators
and a steam finishing pan. They
produced approximately 1200
gallons of syrup as well as other
maple products.
After a pancake and sausage
dinner, served in the Community
Arena in Belmore, Mr. Renwick
Seaforth, Ontario.
demonstrated his sheep dogs at
one of his farms where he has
about 550 breeding ewes. The
tour was organized by Walter
Humphreys of Barry who is
Maple Fieldman for Ontario.
