It took two months to get to
India via Japan, Hong Kong,
Shanghai and Singapore, On the
way, she spent two weeks in
Japan which was a real
experience as it was the old
Japan, not the Americanized one
of today.
When she arrived in India, she
was still unpacking when 'her
superior presented her with a
large book of granirnar containing
the local language. She said that
it was entirely phonetic so not too
difficult to learn.
She was stationed in a fertile,
irrigated area halfway between
Calcutta and Madras. She taught,
kept records, and helped with the
administration of a boys school
for her first term there which was
seven and one half years. One of
the Indian boys she taught is at
present on a speaking tour of
Canada.
The next two terms, she taught
in a girls school. India has really
progressed since the time when
she tried to recruit girls for the
school, and the answer one father
gave her was `Take my cow and if
you can teach her to read, then
you may try to teach my
daughter', until now India has a
woman Prime Minister.
She spent one term living on a
houseboat and doing field work,
also was administrator of a.
leprosy hospital for one term. She
said that for some reason, there
were more men and boys with the
disease than women and girls. A
national figure in the new
Government of Canada, " he
said.
His words for the NDP leader
were none too kind as he
described the man' as the
"spineless wonder".
He quoted the late Winston
Churchill as saying "some men
change their principles for the
sake of their party; while others
change parties for the sake of
their principles."
"He obviously had not met
David Lewis, who has somehow
succeeded in keeping his party,
while discarding its principles,"
he concluded.
He charged Prime Minister
Trudeau of being a socialist
before he joined the Liberals and
remaining a socialist after.
In outlining the policies of the
Conservative party, Mr.
O'Sullivan said a farmer should
have the confidence that his
markets will be protected, and
that his work will bring a fair and
worthwhile return."
Although he spoke mainly of
philosophies, he did point out that
those who earned $10,000 per
year in the start of 1973 now have
$1,000 less.
"It was gone -- eaten • by
inflation that the Prime Minister
said two years ago he had
licked."
