MRS. CATHARINE ROTH
Seaforth woman
doing well at 100
Still spry and in excellent
health, Mrs. Catharine Roth,
Seaforth will celebrate her 100th
birthday on Tuesday, July 2.
Mrs. Roth, 27 East William St.,
now lives with her daughter, Mrs.
Maurice Etue and family. Born in
Culcross Township, she was the
former Catherine McCormick,
daughter of Mr. .and Mrs. Donald
McCormick, and attended school
there until she was 13.
She then took her first train
ride - there were no buses then -
to Windsor, where she worked for
a number of years as a house-
keeper.
While working in a hotel in
Guelph she met her future
husband, Wendelin Roth. When
she was 23, they married and set
up a market garden in Guelph. A
couple of years later they moved
to a farm in the Wingham area.
On the farm, the Roths had ten
children: Sister Henrietta,
Chatham, Sister Teresa,
Windsor, Sister Genevieve, Port
Huron, Mary Etue, Seaforth,
Frank, Florida , John, Michigan,
Joe, Detroit, Harold, London, and
two sons who have passed away.
Her husband died about 40
years ago. Mrs. Roth and her
family then lived in London.
Almost 15 years ago, she came to
the Seaforth area and has lived
with Etues for six years.
Mrs. Roth remembers the
horse and buggy days and the
first automobiles.
`Everybody had a Ford, that I
can remember,' she said, but she
and her husband had a Chevrolet.
`I never noticed the Depres-
sion',' she said, '1 always got
enough to eat.' She has, however,
noticed the difference in prices
over the years. She used to get a
dress for $1.25.
She has 21 grandchildren, 23
great-grandchildren, and five
great-great-grandchildren.
Friends, neighbours, and
relatives have been invited to
attend an open'house in honour of
Mrs. Roth on June 30 from 3 p.m.
to 5 p.m. A family dinner will
follow at the Queens Hotel.
