One of the most tragic realities
thout fire is the fact that people
i think it could never happen to
hem.
Each year over 1,000 Canad-
ans become the victims of their.
'wit carelessness. Smoking in
bed, storing gasoline indoors, and
failing to warn children about the
danger of matches arc the three
most common causes of fires
resulting in deaths.
Canada has one of the worst
tire loss rates in the world. 70% -
of these tires occur in the home.
In 1973, 1,268 Canadians lost
their lives in household fires. This
year the death rate will probably
be higher. Between January and
March of 1974. 16 citizens of a
large metropolitan city died as a
suit of fire. Last year there were
6 deaths in this same city over a
twelve month period.
Fire prevention should be.
radised in every home, says St.
ohn Ambulance. Most of the
ietims would be .alive.. today had.
he simplest of safety measures
een taken. It is the. safety
•onseious person who is most
ikely to escape injury or death.
I. John Ambulance recommends
iat people pay attention to the
!lowing advice. It could prevent
fire and save a life.
Don't smoke in bed.
Keep matches out of the reach
children.
Keep gasoline outdoors in a
nperly vented container.
Never leave suacepans
iattended when cooking with
is or oils.
'People should learn from the
istakes and misfortunes of
hers but don't,' says R.H.
rows, Director of the Toronto
ire Prevention Bureau. 'The
eading causes of fire today are
he same as they were 10 years
go.' Mr. Brown continued to
ay: 'The majority of victims are
died not by flames but by smoke
nd fire gases. Your family will
placed first in its division.
This community service awards
program was established to
provide recognition for
outst andina projects which fulfill
the objectives of Optimist Int-
ernational. The scrapbook will
now travel to Atlanta, Georgia for
the International. Convention on
June 16 - 19, 1974, to compete
against Optimist Clubs from
throughout North America. The
Brussels Club was also
congratulated for leading their
zone in new membership for the
year with eleven new members.
tips
soon as possible.
Avoid unnecessary handling.
Cover the area with a clean
dressing, even a towel or sheet.
Do not apply salves or lotions.
Do not remove burned clothing.
Do not break, blisters.
For the treatment of minor
burns, St. John .Ambulance sug-
gests that relief comes by immer-
sing the burned area in cold
water, When immersion is not
possible, towels or clothes soaked
in cool water and changed
frequently may be applied to the
affected area.
A fire can happen, anywhere
anytime, It takes only minutes for
a fire to destroy an entire building
and its contents.
'Only people can start a fire'
says Mr, Brown, 'and only people
can prevent one.'
Hopefully Canadians will
remember the tragic deaths
which have occurred and from,
them learn the need of practising
fire 'prevention: Hopefully they
will not think it couldn't happen
to them.

When Fire Strikes:
- Awaken or alert all members
of the house and get our
immediately.
- Notify the fire department
from a neighbour's phone or fire
box.
- Meet at a prearranged
checkpoint outside the house to
make sure that everyone is. out.
- If burning fat is the source of
fire, do not attempt to fight the
flames with water. Place a lid on
the pan. Overheated. grease and
water do not mix and will splatter
causing severe burns and pos-
sibly a serious fire.
Fire gasses are lighter than
air. Standing up will thrust your
head into the midst of the-deadly
gases. By staying close to the
floor you. will get more oxygen.
