On March 11th a draft copy of -the proposed Plan for the village of Brussels was
delivered to the village council. The Plan is a lengthy document of text and maps
outlining a land use plan and policies for the development of the village. Many village
residents have been involved in the preparation of the Plan and 3 public meetings have
been held over the last 15 months to get opinions from the public on the design of the
Plan. The village council also took the step of appointing 5 village residents, with
interests in different aspects of the village, to assist the County Planners in
development of the Plan. Public participation has, therefore, been a very valuable and
important part of planning in the village.
This brochure is an outline of the Plan for Brussels. It outlines the basis for detailed
land use goals and policies set out in the Plan. Also included is a land use map showing
which areas will be designated for different land uses.
The major elements of the Plan are:
RESIDENCES 4
That the village remain a predominantly residential community.
That vacant land in the northwest, southwest and southeast corners of the
village be designated for new residential plans of subdivisions and small
mobile home parks.
That apartments be retained in the commercial core area.

That an area for highway commerce be designated on Highway #12 in the

enhanced by policies guiding the design of new buildings to harmonize in
with the older established buildings.
That a core renewal programme be initiated in the village to enhance'the
appearance of the downtown.

OPEN SPACE
That a River Maitland parkway system be established, to include the flood
plain areas, that eventually will be for public use.
That the designated river parkway be enhanced environmentally for public
use for strolling, picnicing and boating.
That open space be provided in the new residential plans of subdivision.
AGRICULTURE
That land presently used for agriculture in the village will be used for
urban development. Agriculture will, therefore, be phased out over time.
