The Ontario Medical Associa-
tion misrepresented scientific
evidence in an attempt to prove
optometrists should not be allow-
ed to administer diagnostic
drugs, Albert Roy - Liberal
Health Critic, said this week.
,Mr. Roy said he was appalled
that the medical association
would resort to misrepresentation
and scare tactics to keep diagnos-
tic drugs solely in the domain of
eye doctors.
He explained that last month
the association sent a brief to all
Members of the Legislature at-
tempting to show that optical
anesthetics and dilating drugs
could have serious side effects
and that optometrists should not
be allowed to use them.
Mr. Roy, M.P.P. for 'Ottawa
East, said there is overwhelming
evidence that optometrists with
the proper care can use diagnostic
drugs in the same way as eye
doctors.
The Krauss-Maffei Go-Urban
test track at the C.N.E. has been
under almost continuous fire
since the Legislature opened.
This week it came under criticism
again.
The cost of the experiment has
increased from the estimated $16
to over $25 million and that is
If; excluding the main station, site
li adjustment and utility relocation
costs.
,1
The Government has argued
that inflation is the villian. The
opposition has rejected that by
saying, the cost of building the
North Yonge Subway increased
only 20% in eight years while the
Krauss-Maffei experiment has
increased 100% in 12 months in
regard to the civil engineering
costs alone.
There have been a number of
calls for the Government to
abandon this costly transportation
system in favour of a practical and
cheap, flexible, light, rapid tran-
sit scheme. ,
Following my weekly report on

number of inquiries about the
guaranteed annual income' sys-
tem as it applies to senior
citizens, which comes into effect
on July 1st, 1974.
By way of clarification I submit
the following example. A single,
old age pensioner who has no
outside income receives a maxi-
mum old age security and guaran-
teed income supplemtn of $191.06
will receive from the Province
$25.61 per month to bring the
pension total to $216.67. The
Province is guaranteeing an in-
come of $216.67 per month to
each single pensioner. If the
outside income, plus the old age
security and guaranteed income
supplemtn equal, or exceed,
$216.67 then the Province will not
make any further payment. How-
ever, if those three sources of
income do not exceed $216.67 the
Province will make up the differ-
ence.
To calculate a pensioner cou-
ple's new guaranteed income the
same procedure as set out above
is followed, Their new guaranteed
income is $433.33 per month. At
the moment, a couple that have
no outside income receive a
maximum old age security pen-
sion plus the guaranteed income
supplement of $364.49. To this
will be added $68.84 to make the
$433.33. As long as the outside
income, plus the O.A.S. and the
G.I.S. do not exceed $433.33 the
Province iv make up the differ-
ence to that point.
At the afternoon UCW meeting
at the home of Mrs. W. Turnbull
20 members were in attendance
and recorded 41 visitations. Mrs.
R. Cousins convened the
devotions with "Mother's Day"
as the theme. The group joined in
singing the hymn 'What a Friend
we have h Jesus". The Scripture,
Proverbs 31, was read by Mrs. A.
Rann.
Mrs.Cousins read two poems,
`My Mother' and 'Call Her
'Blessed' followed by prayer. An
ejoyable reading 'A Mother is a
human being' was read by Mrs.
.W. Miller. Mrs. Hemingway
offered a "Consolation Poem". A
short "In Memoriam" service
was held in memory of Mrs.
Kitchen who passed away March
10, 1974.
In response to the roll call each
member offered a verse or
reading pertaining to "Mother".
The McMillan Family Stereo
Records are available at $3.50.
Mrs. Le Drew and. Mrs. F. Steph-
enson have these for sale.
Any profit from this project will
be sent to the Haiti Mission.
Mrs. Hemingway was in charge
of the study. It concerned the
modernization of Holy Trinity
Church in downton Toronto. The
pros and cons of this venture were
put forth by members of a panel
with further discussion by the
unit members.
The meaning of "Mission" was
again summarized. Mrs.
Hemingway emphasized that
"Actions speak, louder than
words". The members were
asked the question, "What can
we do to get young people
interested in the Church?" It was
agreed unanimously that they
should be made to feel needed
and useful.
A social afternoon will be het*
at the home of Mrs. W. Miller on
Tuesday, June 4.
Report from
Queens Park
By Murray Gaunt, M.P.P.
Business development means
more jobs and increased opportunities.
This is what Ontario is doing
to help businesses grow.
Suppose you operate a manufacturing
company, or a firm that is a supplier to
such a manufacturer. Suppose instead
that you operate a tourist resort, or a
tourist attraction that benefits local
resorts.
Others depend on you for a living.
So your Ontario government wants to
help you help them .. and yourself
through the Ontario Development
Corporation (ODC).
The ODC was established by the
government here in Ontario to provide
financial assistance to buinesses
unable to obtain necessary funds
from conventional lending institutions.
These programs are designed to
stimulate industrial growth, encourage
economic development and increase
employment opportunities in the
central and southwestern 'areas of
Ontario.,
Similar programs exist to aid
businesses in other parts of the Province.
Briefly, ODC Financial Assistance
' programs are divided into two cate-
gories —Incentive Loans and Term
Loans.
In central and southwestern Ontario,
Incentive Loans are provided to es-
tablish new manufacturing operations
or service industries in support of
manufacturing.
These loans may be interest-free or
at a rate lower than the ODC's prevail-
ing rate of interest. Commencement of
repayment may be deferred until the
company is established.
Term Loans are available to finance
new products and processes, exports,
pollution-control equipment, industrial
buildings, tourist operations and the
expansion of small businesses.
Your Ontario government has pre-
pared a concise, easy-to-understand
booklet explaining who may qualify
for ODC Financial Services.
If you would like a copy of the booklet,
or wish to make application for ODC
assistance, write to:
