We liked New Zealand but we were just tourists there and the only people we met were other tourists. In Australia we met the people and they treated us like v.i.p.'s so any comparison on our part would be unfair. The Waitomo caves, a series of underground caves with stalactites, stalagmites and glowworms were s really interesting. One cave called the cathedral was 160 feet high and there was no echo whatever. A lady in our party sang a little song and the acoustics were perfect. A Maori choir gives concerts on Sunday nights but since we were there through the week we missed them. It has been used as a recording studio by some artists because of the perfect acoustics. At a lower level, the ceiling is covered with glowworms. In the darkness, it just looked like a closeup of the milky way. Our Maori guide explained that they fighters, they burn their waste to make the light. Steam Heat At Rotarua, the whole city is built on top of beds of steam. Nearly every house has a pipe belching steam in the back yard. Steam is used for heating, cooking, etc. People come from all over the world for the hot mineral baths. Of course we tried them too. We were told not to stay in for more than 25 minutes Q. Last year my wife attended university for eight months. She did not earn any income and did not receive an allowance of any kind. Does this mean! can claim the education dedUction on her behalf? A. Yes, under these circumstances, you would be entitled to an education deduction of $400. Q. My employer sent me a T4 slip showing the amount of tuition fees he paid on my behalf last year. Do I have to report this on my return? A. Yes, but if you attended a qualified educational institution, you should be entitled to claim tuition fees to offset it. Be sure to submit a proper receipt for tuition when making this claim. Q. Can I claim payments made to a denturist as medical ;expenses? A. Yes. If the payment is made ,to a denturist licensed to practice under the laws of the province !Where he operates. q. During the year I contributed S300 toward the support of a Ineedy child in our neighborhood who was not related to me. May I claile the $300 as a charitable donation? A. No Private acts of b enevolence do not qualify s no matter how worthy the eatise. The contribution must be to a registered Organization: 'Charitable- Q I won a cash prize fet. !u ggotioa l made to' trey rtitiloyer last year., Is this Money as they were weakening. We certainly slept well afterward! We went on tours through fields where the mud bubbled and snapped like a boiling pudding. Steam shot up to 120 ft. in the air and new geysers were still forming. Black ones showed graphite; yellow ones sulphur and white ones, limestone. Another tour of a recreated Maori village showed the carvings, houses and meeting house of theMaori people. At the workshop, young men were carving and the girls showed us how to make their ceremonial costumes. The grass skirts were made by scraping, drying and dyeing the leaves of the flax plant which grew wild. The black, red and white woolen tops were handwoven in traditional designs. At night, we saw a Maori concert which was the highlight of our New Zealand visit. The church belonging to the Maori, had a large window overlooking the bay with a picture of Christ painted on it and as you sat in the pew, it looked as though He was really walking in on the waters of the bay. The graves in the churchyard were of cement, built on top of the ground, as a conventional grave could not be dug for rock and steam. As you walked along the street, it was common to see steam coming out of a crack and you could hear the bubbling and hissing of boiling water.underneath. Our guide told taxable? If it is taxable where do I enter it on my income tax return? A. Yes, this award would be Considered to be related to your., employment. Therefore, it forms part of your income and is subject to income tax. If it is not included in your T4 slip, enter it on your form in the section marked "Other Income" and specify the source of this income. Q. I am co-owner of a deceased parent's property with my two brothers and have been thinking of transferring my share to a grandson: Would this come under property for capital gains tax? A. Yes, a gift of capital property is deemed to be a disposition of the property at fair market value resulting in a realization of a capital loss or gain. us that New Zealand had, been submerged twice in its history and was on the way down for the third time. The way that ground was bubbling and steaming we thought there was more danger of it blowing up first. Kiwi bird The Kiwi is the national bird of New Zealand. It is a nocturnal bird and cannot fly. The bird is about the size of a large hen and lays an egg almost as big as an ostrich egg. The father bird sits on the egg for 82 days to hatch it. No wonder the birds are scarce! The climate in New Zealand is almost perfect - cool in summer and mild in winter. They had snow in the 1890's for the last time in Auckland..It is a land of scenery, mountains covered with green grasS and sheep grazing right to the top. We saw no land under cultivation along the highway from Rotarua to Auck- land. Hedgerows acted as fences and created patterns clear to the top of the mountains. We did not get off the -north island at all as we didn't have 'time. Auckland was a large city of one storey houses and corrugated roofs usually painted red. Many of the old houses were being torn down and two or more , storey houses built to replace them. The new houses really didn't look better but at least they gave more living space using less ground and they are trying to keep the city from spreading out and taking up any more valuable farmland. Labour has a forty-hour week for .shops with time and a half for overtime for the first three hours then double time. This is by Act of Parliament. Extinct Volcanoes New Zealand seems to be full of extinct volcanoes. Mt. Etna is See Mellow lined washetst dryers - at, OLDFIELD'S PRO- HARDWARE 887-6851 — BRUSSELS right in the middle of Auckland and in Rotarua, we went for a boat trip on one that had filled with water and made a lake. At the end of the jetty, the water was 275 feet deep. The harbour where we disembarked had been rent by an earthquake and we could see where the rocks would fit together but now they are half a mile 'apart rising high above the water. Auckland has a harbour to rival . Sidney in size - we didn't have time to take a tour of it, in fact there were no tours listed, only a ferry which left from the quay across the street from our hotel. While 'we were at Mary and Wayne's, Doctor Robin Hans- combe, a local doctor took Carman, Watt and Wayne as his guests to the Willaura Lion's. Club meeting. Carman exchanged an Atwood Lion's flag for a Willaura flag and although Watt was not a Lion, he was given this flag. Business Directory DONALD M.
