Combine There is no way that you can slow a combine engine down and reduce fuel consumption because it is necessary that a combine engine run at a constant speed at all times to do an efficient job of threshing. However, there are things you can do with the engine to make sure that it will perform to its optimum. capability and burn less fuel while doing so. Some of the things, you can do are:. 1.. Make sure that your plugs. and points are in good condition. Check them before going into_ the field t cleaning the plugs and resetting the gap and replacing the points if they are pitted. The opening on the points should also be adjusted, to the specs of the engine- manufacturer. It is wise if the points are replaced to• replace the condenser as well. 2. Make sure that your carburetor is clean and that the float level is properly adjusted and that the mixture. is properly - set so: that excessive fuel is not consumed. 3. Service the engine air cleaner regularly to_ make sure that the engine is not starved for air thereby increasing fuel
consumption..
4. Make sure. that the combine
is welt lubricated, and that all
drives are properly adjusted so
that extra horsepower is not
required to= keep the machine
operating .efficiently.
Ground Speed
Sometimes a slight reduction in
ground speed can save a lot of
fuel in a combine. By watching
the cylinder tachometer the
operator can tell,, based • on the
fluctuations of the tachometer
needle, how frequently it is
necessary for the engine governor
to- cut in and provide extra power
to maintain the constant RPM of
the threshing mechanism. Each-
time the engine governor cuts in,
more gasoline is. injected into the-
engine and fuel consumption goes
up. It is therefore possible for the
operator to save fuel by reducing
the ground speed of the machine
so that the engine works
consistently andthat the governor
through its constant action is not
injecting excessive quantities_ of
fuel into the engine with the
booster pump.
Sometimes, if you are going to
be stopped for a few minutes, it is
better to leave the engine idle
highway speeds, with the hydraulic range lever in high range. (self-propelled) 13. Harvest crop at optimum stage of,maturity to minimize cutting and conditioning energy. Automatic Bale Wagon 1. Build storage sheds for hay closer to the fields so that hauling distance from the field to storage would not be as far, thus conserving gasoline with the tractor or self-propelled machine. 2. When. operating ' the equipment on the road the same thing pertains to our equipment as it would to trucks or anything else. The speed • that the man drives up and down the road is certainly a major factor. He could reduce his speed by 10 or 15 m.p.h. on the self-propelled units, thus using less gas. 3. Make sure tires are properly inflated for field and highway operation. 4. Make as few trips as possible with a partial load, thus conserving energy. 5. On our self-propelled units make sure that the engine is properly tuned and serviced. Grinder-Mixer 1. Do not allow more than 1/4 " radius to be worn on hammers
before reversing, them.
2. Turn screen when noticeable
radius is worn on holes. After
holes are worn on both ends,
either replace screen or have it
rerolled to u se opposite side.
3. Run tractor at recommended
'pto speed.
4. Do not feed hammermill to
the point where PTO speed drops
below 540 or 1000, whichever
applies.
5. Concentrate on uniform
feeding of hammermill to
accomplish even flow of material
into mill and thus eliminate
surging,
6. Keep unit well lubricated.
7. Keep air system cleaned out
and free of obstructions.
8. Maintain proper backlash on
bevel gears and maintain proper
sprocket alignment and chain
tension. Tight gears and chains
consume power.
9. Keep auger tubes clean and
free of obstruction and remove
material build up.
10.E Maintain proper alignment
and tension of belt drives.
Diesel Engines
1. Check injector timing for
best efficiency.
2. Service fuel filters regularly
~:asleilltYl7ll `. 9. Avoid long idling periods. 10. Avoid engine overloads. Trucks, Tractors and Equipment 1. Keep tires properly inflated. 2. Avoid jack rabbit starts. 3. Tires with good treads on drive wheels are more efficient than poor treads. 4. Avoid substitution of manufacturers tire size recom-mendations. Throug Huron Expositor Classified Want- Ads
