The Brussels Post, 1974-04-03, Page 30E -W-TILATIWU TA AVAILABLE NOW WITH ONE- OR TWO-SPEED MOTORS. AND CONTROLS - The SUR VENT Fan is a complete exhaust fan consisting of motor, fan blade, protective wire guard, fan box, and shutters, and may be =installed in a self-contained easy:swivelling frame making it a turnabout unit (plus substantial, properly-designed weather hood). The fan box 'is durably constructed of heavy gauge galvanized iron. This design uses a minimum number of pieces with lapped joints eliminating spot welds and seams exposed to the weather. The shutters are made of aluminum and open and close automatically. All moving parts of the shutters work on nylon bearings assuring life-long wear. The fan blades are of a new design, shaped and balanced to. move a large volume of air noiselessly. The motor is dependable and dust - proof. It has ball - bearings and Automatic Thermo Cut-Off Switch. Motor and fan are protected by- a wire guard. A guide to the number of fans needed to ventilate different types of barns. Despite our optimism at the federal level of government about the potential to expand markets and production, the industry in general was not optimistic two and three years ago about future demand, and was not ready for the sudden increases in demand that blossomed on world markets, starting about 18 months ago. But outurol gos''000rloti to produce nitrogen fertilizers_ The decisions we reach regarding our long-term national energy policy will strongly influence the short and long-term potential for production of nitrogen fertilizer. Before' the fertilizer industry will invest in major new nitrogen-producing facilities, it needs to know how much natural gas will be available, and where; and it needs long-term supply commitments. New nitrogen fertilizer plants have traditionally depended on a strong export Multl r...,nnis Corporat.on nas announced plans to open mines in northern Ontario which will supply some phosphorous —about 60,000 tons a year towards our total demand of about 2,500,000 tons a year. These mines can only be developed if and -when the mining companies find markets for the iron ore that is extracted with the phosphorous. The northern Ontario mines, for example, yield about 90 per cent iron ore and only about ,10 per cent phosphorous.

The switch to forage-fed beef will not reduce the demand and production of grain and other crops. It will, however, tend to limit the amount of land devoted to those 'other crops, so we can expect that land to be farmed Use other herbicides nth atrazine Ontario farmers have at their" disposal a variety of herbicide treatments to control the annual and perennial weeds that compete with corn for soil nutrients every year. Of these, atrazine has probably been the nearest thing to a perfect herbicide because of its non-injurious effect on corn.
Recently, some weaknesses in
control by atrazine have been
noticed according to Professor
J.D.Bandeen, crop scientist at
the Ontario Agricultural College,
University of Guelph. These
relate to its indifferent
performance on annual grasses
and its tendency to persist in the
soil.
Grass herbicides, such as Satan
(preplant incorporated), Lasso
(preplant, preemergence, or early
postern erg ence) , or Bladex
• (preemergence or early
postemergenee), can be used to
control annual grasses such as
foxt ail, crabgrass and fall
panicium before they become
serious problems, but these
require some assistance from
.atrazine if they are to be
completely effective on, broad-
leaved and other types of annual
grasses.
"The main advantages of using
- ;these chemicals in conjunction
with atrazine are that we not only
get better weed control, we can
also lower the rate of atrazine
required and partially overcome
its soil persistence which can
affect following crops," says
Professor Bandeen.
In 1974, mixtures of Sutan and
Bladex(preplant) or Lasso and
Bladex (preemergence) have
been recommended. These
mixtures; will not carry over in the
soil and should provide good
annual weed control.
