The following motions were carried. - That we support the A.M.O. intervention of Bell Canada's proposed rate increase, and Clerk be instructed to inform them of the decision. - That Allan Smith, Mrs. Mildred Jacklin, Carl Graber Jr., Bryan Purdon, Russ Hall and Royal Homes be granted building permits per application. - That Ontario Housing Corporation consider increasing the number of units of Senior Citizens apartments from 23 to 35 due to the considerable length of time involved in preparation for construction. Public enquiries lead us to believe that 23 units would be inadequate for the combined municipalities of Brussels, Morris and Grey. Graber and Bill Smith of Brussels; Al Houston and Doug Bremner of Brussels and Ken and Ron Williams of Listowel. Couples 1. Maitland on Thursday, while attempting to launch their canoe for .the race, had not been initiated in the art of canoeing, They quickly found that it takes .a good deal of practise to become adept in the handling of such craft. Bill Elmes and Ken Fowler, (Continued on Page 16) Local men win Cribbage prize Brussels placed third in the Royal Canadian District C. Cribbage finals held in Preston on Saturday of last week. There Were representatives of twenty-eight Legion branches competing with Al Nichol, Gordon Nichol, • Alex. Keffer and Mick Conaboy from Brussels Legion. They will now go, on to the provincial finals to be held in Copper Cliff on April 29th. Alex Keffer and Mick. Conaboy received a prize as runners-up in high doubles. A long time Village of Brussels employee, David (Scotty) Hastings, passed away suddenly in Brussels on Thursday, March 28th, 1974. Born in Oliiitree,. Scotland, the son of the late Mr, and Mrs. William Hastings, he was in his 62nd year. He came to Canada, at the age Of 14 to Chesley, Ontario. He was Married to Vera Pak of Brussels at the Presbyterian Manse, in Brussels on November 1939. He enlisted in the 100th Battery, R,C A in 1939. He went overseas with 100th Battery and transferred to the Canadian Scottish, He received his discharge in 1945. After coming to Brussels ae WAS ari employee of buricatt 'Mcbonaid 'Lumber and Joe Brewer' Coal before his many years of service fOrjhe Village of The Brussels Figure Skating Club held 'Competition Day' for its younger members in the Brussels arena on Thursday. President Joanne.. King along with some willing mothers provided lunch for the skaters. Ribbons were given to the first five (winners) in each group and results are as follows: Novice - Donna Godkin; Leanne Fraser; Alison Peters; Carla King;. and "Kim , Juniors - Sandra Sholdice; Kim Stephenson and Debbie Johnston (tied); Tim Fritz; Angela Super; and Evelyn Stroop and Kelly Stephenson (tied). Intermediate - Janice Adams; Pam Wilson; Todd Wheeler; Greg Campbell; and Debbie Campbell. This winds up their 1973-74 skating season in Brussels. The Wingham Figure Skating Club hosted a test day on Saturday March 30th for various clubs in the area. Members of the Brussels Club under the direction of Mrs. Faye MacDonald tried dance tests there and all were successful in passing. Dances passed were - Preliminary Dances - Dutch Waltz Dianne Godkin; Jane Pheifer; Jill McCutcheon; Lee Ann Cossitt; Jackie Workman; and Vicki McCall. Brussels. He was a member of the Brussels Legion Bfanch 218 and had his 25 year pin. As a member of the Brussels Legion Pipe' Band' he played the tenor drum. A Legion service was held Sunday at the M.C:Watts Funeral Home. He was also a member of the DAVID .HASTINGS. -Canasta Tango- Dianne. Godkin; Cindy Evans; Jill McCutcheon, Karen Bridge; Vicki McCall; Cathy Boneschansker; Annette Boneschansker.; and Debbie Prior. -Swing Dance- Cindy Evans; Karen Bridge. This completes the preliminary dance set for Cindy Evans and Karen Bridge. Junior Bronze 'Dances,,,-,,Fiesta Tango - Bridge. -Willow Waltz - Judy Adams; ,Faye Holman (Monkton Figure Skating Club). -Ten Fox - Judy Adams; Faye Holman. This completes the Junior Bronze dance set for Judy and Faye. Misses Carol Wheeler, Joan Heuther, Catharine Cardiff and Michelle McCutcheon partnered the Brussels skaters for their dances. Unfortunately becuase of an accident in the dark room, the film that was taken at the Figure Skating Club competitions on the weekend did not turn out.
