Why don't all schools take Field Trips ? board asked

A guideline for staffing of
elementary schools is to go on the
agenda of a special meeting of the
Huron County Board of Education
called for next Monday night,
D.J. Cochrane, Director of
Education, said the class size/
Teacher-pupil ratio was possibly
the most important item in the list
of ten recommendations resulting
from the visitation to schools
made by Board Chairman E.C,
Hill and himself last Fall, and
now his staff and he are ready to
discuss a number of these items
with the board members at the
special meeting next week.
Speaking of the budget for
1974, Mr. Cochrane said "The
Board has not yet been given the
grant regulations and other
pertinent material necessary to
complete the budget, but based
on the assumption that grants will
not be less than last year, we can
produce one for you to consider if
you wish." Mr, Cochrane said
because of spiralling costs, the
grant regulations had been pulled
back by the Ministry for
re-consideration,, but that it was
important that he get some
interim guideline for hiring
elementary teachers.
R.B. Allan, Board Superin-
tendent, said estimated enrol-
ment in elementary schools will
be down 227 pupils and three less
teachers will be required. He said
it may be possible that the Board

Q. 1 understand that a person
who moved in 1973 to. a new
locality is now entitled to deduct
the cost of moving from his
income for income tax purposes,
Is this correct?
A. Yes. If you moved to anew
location you may be eligible
under certain circumstances to
deduct your moving expenses
from income earned at the new
location.
Q. I graduated from university
in 1973 and moved my wife and
family to another province, where
I began working. What moving
expenses, if any, may I claim as a
deduction on my 1973 income tax
return?
A. Moving expenses are an
allowable deduction from the
salary or business income earned
in the new work location. Any
moving expenses in excess of the
income partied at the new work
location in the year of the move
can be claimed against the salary
and business income earned in
the following year.
The moving expense claim
would include any of the following
costs 'incurred:
1. Travelling expenses, including
meals and lodging, in the course
of moving from the old residence
to the new residence.
2. The Cost of transporting and
storing household effects.
3. The cost of temporary accom-
modation (not exceeding 15 days)
near the old or new residence.
4. The cost of cancelling the lease
on the old residence,
The selling costs pertaining to
the old residence:
The above moving costs include
those of the taxpayer and the
nienibett- of his funisehold.
Q. May every person who
moves in 1973 or later deduct the
cost from his income or is the
deduction restricted in any way?
A. No, not everybody is able to
claim. a deduction for moving
expenses. The deduction is
limited to salary•or wage earners,
self-employed persons,' and, in
some cases, students attending
post secondary educational
institutions,
Q. If a wage earner, for
example, moves in 1973, how
does he determine if he qualifies
for the moving expense deduc-
tion? Can you tell us briefly what
the rules are?
A. The most important rule to
keep in mind is that moving
expenses may be deducted from
income if you move to a new
residence to earn wages, in a new
location in Canada, and your new
residence is at least 25 miles
closer to your new place of work
than your former residence was.
You should also remember that
moving expenses may be de-
ducted only from income earned
at a new place of work or
business,
Q. Can I claim as moving
expenses the cost of transporta-
tion, food and lodgings 'spent
trying' to establish a 'new
residence before I actually term-
inate my present employment/
A. No, You Mast have ceased
your emplOytnent at the former
location.
Q. Can I now claim all the
premiums which I pay for medical
insurance?
A. No. You nay only claim as a
inedical expense the preitinnis
which you pay to a non-govern-

urban-ural exchange. The stu-
dents from Burlington visited
Howick on December 13. The
students will visit Stelco, Ford of
Canada, Square 1 and various
.sites on the Golden Horseshoe.
Cost of trip to be about $65
charged to school budget.
From Principal .J.L, Wooden of
South. Huron District High School
to send 25 students, members of
the Senior Outers Group on an
overnight excursion in the local
area April 19 and 20, travelling on
foot and by canoe to provide
practice in camping and canoeing
skills as well, as menu planning
and group activities. Cost to the
Board will be nil.
Another request to send 24
students, members of the Senior
Outers Group from South Huron
on a one-week excursion to the
Magnetawan River area on May
18-25 to practise camping and
canoeing skills, to give practice in
orienteering, to observe biolo-,
gical and geographical aspects of
that area of the Canadian Shield,
to develop initiative, resourceful-
ness, self reliance and self
confidence in group situations.
No cost to Board,
Mrs. Mollie Kunder ofSeaforth
asked why some schools go on
Field Trips regularly while other
schools do not request them. It
was pointed out to her that many
schools participate in Field Trips
that are in a mileage range of
their school that it is not
necessary to ask Board permis-
sion, Mr. Cochrane said it
depended to some extent on the
principal of the school whether
they took full advantage of trips
available. He informed the Board
members that the school budget
for Field Trips is based on the
enrolment in the school.
"It's. not fair • to the pupils if,
they are not taking advantage of
- the trips, apparently there is a
budget for it," Mrs. Kunder said.
The Superintendents will be
asked to study. each school to see
if all students are given the
opportunity to participate in Field
Trips.
The Board Chairman, E.C.
Hill, and Business Administrator,
R.B. Dunlop, were named to
negotiate salaries with the cust-
odian staff as their contracts run
out on June 1.
Norman Mund y, custodian at
F.E. Madill Secondary School,
