Arthur Haid, R.R.4, Listowel, Chairman of the Finance Committee, distributed copies of the 1973 Financial Statement which had been prepared by Jack A Brussels man was selected Monday as one of the twelve jurors who are hearing the murder trial of Lloyd George Salter, 39, of R.R.3, Kippen. Frank Rutledge of Brussels will be one member of the all male jury which began hearing evidence Tuesday in the trial of Mr. Salter. The former sheet metal worker was arrested last fall and charged with the murder of Hensall widow Jane Burton McMurtrie, 93. Selection of the jury in Goderich at the Huron County Court House took more than an hour as defense lawyer J.M.Donnelly of Goderich and Crown Attorney W.G.Cochrane went through an entire 60 member petit jury without agreeing on a twelve • person panel. Mr. Justice Thomas G. Zuber is presiding at the trial which lawyers said is expected to last at least until next Tuesday. The report indicated that the. total expenditures for 1973 amounted to $2,653,178 and this total was financed by: local taxation, $353,159; Provincial grant, $2,205,150; tuition fees, $63,365; provincial incentive program for 1973, $10,631; accrued interest $10,198; transportation recovery, $8,171; and other $2,504. Mr. Lane said the actual ordinary expenditure and recognized ordinary expenditure for grant purposes was $619.94 per pupil, or $2,700 below the Board's 1973 ceiling. He said the 1973 expenditure total increased by $226,200 over 1972 and that $208,700 of this amount was from provincial ' grants. Mr. Lane said the 1974 budget will not 'be available until the Ministry of Education releases the 1974 grant regulations. "At (Continued on Page 12) • Can you canoe? The races start from the Lions Park, where there will be a booth. The canoeists will race downstream to Stone School House. You can 4:30, as the canoes wind along the Maitland and pass three different checkpoints. There are four classes of entries in the race, women, couples, men and professionals, with fees ranging from $5 to $10 ,per canoe. Prize money and trophies will be presented to winners at a , dance Saturday night in the Brussels Legion Hall. • watch the start and then catch a glimpse of them at the bridges along their route. Presentation of prizes will take place at the Legion Hall with a dance to follow later in the 'evening.
