Meals on whee s give elderly more thanfood
Several local people have talked about
the peed for a Meals on Wheels program
which would serve at least one
hot meal a day to elderly people living
„alone in town who are unable to cook big
meals for themselves.
All that is needed here is an organization
to sponsor the program and a group of
volunteers who could drive the dinners to
senior citizens every week.
Meals on Wheels has been operating
' successfully in Wingham and has recently
been established in Goderich.
This is the third year for the operation of
a Meals on Wheels program in Mitchell.
The Post talked to one of the
organizers of the Mit chell program, Mrs,
Ellen Ross, who is a member of the Open
Circle Fellowship group. People in the
group became concerned about the lack of
good hot meals for people living' alone arid';
decided to start Meals On Wheels,
Meals on Wheels in Mitchell is a
extensive operation because the group
there must plan menues, shop and cook the
meals as well as delivering them once a
week.
Meals are served every Thursday at
noon to 14 16 elderly people per week,
Mrs. Ross said, About 75 to 80 volunteers
are involved including conveners, cooks,
kitchen helpers and drivers.
Mitchell Senior citizens pay 50 cents for
their weekly hot dinner. "With everyone
donating their time and some of our food
being donated, we have been breaking
even", Mrs. Ross says, "although we may
not much longer as food prices go up".
Those who would like 'to receive. Meals
on Wheels simply have to request it or
have a neighbour or relative contact
someone who is involved in the plan,
Meals on Wheels has been criticized
because it only scratches the surface.
"What good is one hot nourishing meal a
week, if an elderly person doesn't eat
properly for the rest of the week?" Some
scoffers say.
Ellen Ross in Mitchell acknowledges this
criticism, "We should be sending out a
meal three times a week, but at least this
helps somewhat". -
Meals on Wheels gives senior citizens
more than just food. It provides a bit of
companionship, a visit to look forward to
every week when the meal is delivered and
proof that somebody cares.
