1974 Food Outlook
The 1974 dairy, meat and
poultry outlook as seen by
economists at Agriculture
Canada, contains predictions as
to what may happen to retail
prices for these products this
year.
Demand for fluid milk is
expeCted to rise but federal-
provincial agreements for
consumer subsidies will help
restrain price increases during
1974. Shortages in milk supplies
and arise• in fluid milk sales has
decreased the quantity available
for industrial use. Consequently
prices of butter and cheese may
rise in 1974.
Due to uncertainties in beef
supply and demand, it is difficult
to forecast prices for beef this

coming year. However they are
not expected to reach the record,
highs of last summer.
During the first half of 1974,
pork output may be lower and
prices higher than during . the
same period in 1973. Pr ices in the
second half of the year ar e
expected to average. below the
record high prices of :late 1973.
With the firm prices of red
meat, poultry still presents itself
as an attractive alternative. Due
to high storage stocks and a good
supply, chicken broiler prices are
expected to decrease in early
1974. By mid-year, prices will
probably rise again as storage
stocks are reduced. Turkey prices
'are expected to decline in the first
half with increases in supply,'
especially in the United. States.
Demand is not likely to increase,
unless turkeys ar e featured at
retail. -

national petroleum corporation.

on exploration and it should also
contribute to the development of
the Athabasca oil sands.
He said that as the corporation
develops, it will require hundreds
of millions of dollars over the
early years of its operation.
Besides its own exploration
activities, the corporation will
participate in joint ventures with
smaller Canadian-controlled
firms.
