It may look like the beach in July, but it's Brussels, along the banks of. the
Maitland River in February as contestants get ready to plunge into the icy river for
the Polar Daize Polar Dip. Snow Was falling and some contestants including one girl
in 'a skimpy bikini ran around in their bare feet before plunging into the river

Saturday night was well attended,
Sunday afternoon was
Snowmobile race time. Eighty-six
entries were registered for the
various racing events. The bright
sunshine brought a large
spectator crowd despite the
cold. The track was good and all
races came off with no mishaps.
J. S. McCutcheon, in charge of
the races, is grateful to all those
who assisted in any Wa.y to make
the affair a success.

In scanning the Mitchell Advocate mention is made of a
visit through the spacious rooms but empty, of furnishings as
the Ritz Luterhan Villa nears completion and is 'fast emerging
as an integral part of the community. An organization
meeting was scheduled for February 20th.. - -Mitchell
council accepted the operating budget for water pollution
control. The budget_ presented an allowance of $10,000 for
equipment for phosphorus removal, which must be
undertaken this year and chemicals for this removal
estimated at $11,000. - - - Mrs. Stafford (Jean) Johnston of
R.R.2,Mitchell, was at Fanfare Books, Stratford, on Saturday,
autographing her book, "Wilderness Women" for
purchasers. It was her husband who collaborated with their'
son Dr. Hugh Johnston, in the publication of the History of
Perth County. Mr. Johnston has latterly been associated with
the Kitchener-Waterloo Record. - - - Ross Marshall, Kirtkon,
named president of the Holstein-Friesian Association of
Canada, on Thursday, has the distinction of being the first
breeder from H uron County to receive the honor.
The Zurich Citizens Dews reports that after scouting
around for months, Stanley Township has taken options on
102 acres in the township to be developed as a sanitary land
fill site. It is situated about Yipf a mile west of Varna, lot 16 in
the Bayfield Road. - - - Mr. and Mrs. William Bender,
Holmesville, formerly of the Zurich area, celebrated their
50th Wedding .Anniversary on Sunday when friends and
relatives were present for a reception at the White Carnation
in Holmesville.
The Blyth Standard reports that Mrs. Mary Phelan was
guest of honour at a surprise 80th birthday party held at her
home. Attending were Mrs. 'Phelan's two children, Louis and
Mary (Mrs. Cyril Boyle), and other relatives were preseent
from London, Goderich, St. Augustine, Auburn and Blyth. •

members approved the recommendation of amalgamating
with the Wingham Credit Union and its Board of Directors

Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Pickett, according to the Clinton News
Record, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on
Monday, February 18th. The reception was held at Alexander
Marine and General Hospital where Mrs. Pickett, who is 78,
has been confined since last fall.Mr. Pickett, who is 87, has
been a patient at. Clinton Public Hospital for the last four
years. - -;The Ontario Plowmen's Association has announced
that Huron County will host the 1978 International Plowing
Match. - - -Hullett Township Council last week gave their
approval to a motion to have the Ontario Ministry of
Transportation and Communication carry out a survey of
traffic control signs on the boundary between Hullett and
McKillop Township. - - -Mrs. Dollie Richmond, a Clinton
native, recently celebrated her 99th birthday at the
Kindersley and District Nursing HOme in Kindersley,
Saskatchewan. She was the former Sarah Spooner. - - -
Birthday congratulations are extended to Mrs. Ab McCartney
of Huronview who will be 92 years young, February 22nd. - - -
For the third year in a row, Clinton will have at least one team
in the Ontario finals of the Youth Bowling Conference, as the
senior boys' team won the Zone finals in Zurich on Sunday.
The Lucknow Sentinel reports that the annual meeting of
the. West Wawanosh Mutual Fire Insurance Company
attracted 75 policy holders to the Dungannon Agricultural
Hall Friday, with President. Gerald Kerr, R.R.6, Goderich in
the chair. The report indicated the highest net gain in

Fire gutted a structure known as the Little Theatre Barn,
according to the Goderich Signal Star, at the residence of
William Cochrane, 28 Nelson St. W., last Wednesday, Loss

The Exeter Times-Advocate reports that area Legions join
toponsor cadets. The Army Cadet program, which was
dropped from the program of the local high school several
years ago, may be reinstituted ; but will not be associated with
the school. Legion Branches at Exeter and Lucan have agreed
to join forces to sponsor a Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps.
