Sixty-five teachers from many
parts of Western Ontario spent
part of last weekend outdoors.
They were learning to get along
and like outdoor living, even in
the winter.
The outdoor weekend was
organized by a committee of
Huron County teachers with help
from the Ontario . Council on
Outdoor Education at the former
McDowell property near Auburn
which is owned by the Maitland
Valley Conservation Authority.
Jim Bishop, a teacher at Seaforth
Public School, was one of the
organizers.
After supper Friday night, Mr.
Bishop said, about half the
teachers slept outdoors down by
the Maitland River at the edge of
Auburn. The rest of the teachers
were billeted at the Community
Centre in Auburn.
The outdoor workshop was
designed to give teachers
confidence about their ability to
get along outside in the winter
and to teach them skills that can
be passed on to students.
Small group activities on
Saturday included cross-country
skiing, snowshoeing, outdoor
camping and snow studies of local
flora and fauna conducted by a
forest technician from the
Maitland Valley Authority. Some
teachers practised rope climbing
tip and down the height of an old
bank barn on the property. All
cooked their lunch outside on
camp fires.
Teachers from St. Marys,
Sarnia and area, Kitchener,
London, Owen Sound and Lions
Head and from Exeter, Goderich,
Seaforth and Clinton attended the
outdoor workshop.
