The Brussels Post, 1974-01-23, Page 11Mrs. Marion Brech in of the
onsumers Association of Canada
undoubtedly a very smart and
edicated woman. Her organizat-
n does a lot in research and
vice to consumers on the
oducts that are for sale in this
it country. However, like almost
yone else, she has a blind spot.
1i
meone with a blind spot who,
1 rsues their idea of necessity
ndly, is called a fanatic on this
rticular issue.
Mrs. Brechin's blind spot is
arketing boards. One can
sume that she doesn't see flight
om wrong as soon as the term is
mentioned. Having said this, I
lope to support this statement.
e claimed in an attack on the
w national turkey board, that
F. er the egg board was formed,
e egg prices shot up, and she
s right. What she doesn't want
o see, is that the egg price had to
up or all egg producers would
ve been bankrupt by now and
would be dependent on
ierican eggs. But American
g prices are higher than ours.
without an egg -board, the
ice of eggs would have been
her than they actually are.
ere are some supporting
ures, figures -that are available
Mrs. Brech in. In August 1973,
,e egg producer had a profit-
argin of 4.5c doz'. Price to
Ontario producers 68-70c doz, US
price 70 - 82c doz. On January
8/74, because of lower feed costs,
the production cost dropped by
2.4c doz., the profits dropped by
2.1c doz. and the price set by the
boards to the producer dropped
6c doz. to 63c. This is still 10c
below the US price, where they
have none of Marion's hated
marketing boards.
Her claim that the price didn't
come down after feed costs
dropped off somewhat is also
false, as you can sed'in'ihe above
figures. That they didn't drop
back to a loss level is only fair to
the egg producer and I can't think
of any who will dispute this. So
you see folks tht even smart and
dedicated people as Marion B.
can not always be dependent
upon to give both sides an equal
hearing.
At last, , after more than 25
years of discrimination by doctors
against meat, truth is coming out.
4 Last year a less well known US
doctor spoke out against his
colleagues for linking meat and
cholesterol and heart disease.
Now, no less than Dr. Wm.
Sherman of the US national Food
andHealth agency says that new
research has proven that there is
no relationship between meat
eating and heart disease.
