Probably one of the worst aspects of winter for many 'of us is the ice that builds up on sidewalks, , driveways and roads. For homeowners, getting rid of the ice requires the use of either salt or urea. While salt is fast-acting and most commonly used by local government agencies, homeowners should use it very carefully and only when necessary because it is very toxic to plants and grasses, states Burke McNeill, horticultural specialist. Salt should be spread cautiously so that it cannot come in contact with lawns. The resulting slush should not be allowed to run onto lawns or around the roots of trees. On the other hand, urea is a nitrogen fertilizer, and may be safely used to remove ice in areas where plants are grown. The resulting runoff can be utilized by the plants or grass in the spring.
