WHITE PELICAN — Big and striking, this pelican
nests on the ground in close-packed colonies on
rocky islands or headlancis in lakes. With a wing
span of over 8 feet and weighing from 15 to 20
pounds it is one of our largest birds. They
frequently come into larger marshes in pursuit of
small fish. Groups may be seen fishing together,
using their enormous bills as dip-nets. In Canada'
confined to the prairie provinces where it ranges

Bendix lays off 74 in Henson
Seventr-four of 190 employees
of the Bendix Home. Systems. Ltd.
plant at Hensall were laid, oft' on
Tuesday, bringing to over 500 the
number of persons in Huron
County who had become
unemployed in the last month.
The 74 workers at the Hensall
plant, which manufactures
trailers and motor homes, were
laid off because the company was
making some line changes and
retooling. The company will
continue to produce some mobile
homes and trailers,
The 74 laid off workers will be
jobless at least five to six weeks,
according to Don Morphew,
vice-president of the recreational
vehicles division of Bendix.
Mr. Merphew stressed thai the
lay off was temporary, but the
workers could be off as long as 13
weeks, Making it necessary for-
the company to give severance
pay.
At its peak production period,
the Hensall plant employed
nearly 250 persons:
Glendale Corporation of
Strathroy closed their Clinton
plant at Vanastra on December
21, putting 32 employees out of
work. Plant manager Murray
Hounsell said the plant, which
manufactured motor homes and
camper trailers, 'was being shut
down because the energy crisis
had caused a shortage of
materials and scared off potential
buyers.
Six weeks ago, the- Hall Lamp
of Centralia went into
bankruptcy, throwing 397
employees out of work. Efforts by
the former management of the
plant and the provincial
government to reopen the plant
have been unsuccessful so far.
Allowances Help Child
Allowances help introduce
children to the world of living on a
fixed income. But an allowance
given before age five will not have
much training value,
When you think your child -can
begin to assume the
responsibility for a little money,
that's when you, the parents and
the child need to plan the
allowance together.
First, you must decide what the
allowance will be for. Does it
cover birthday presents and
presents for family members? Is
it to be used to pay for school
supplies or lunches?
Then, get a fair estimate of how
much money this will take by
having the child keep track of the
money spent on these items for a
few weeks. When the expenses
are totalled, add a little more for
the child to spend freely:
A youngster won't get any
practice spending money and
using judgement if every cent is
planned in advance. The amount
of the allowance needs to undergo
changes as the child grows older.
And sometimes, even with good
management on the part of the
child, emergencies will arise.
Let the child know you are
willing to discuss problems.
Weigh the merits of each case
when deciding if the child needs
extra money or not, ,To be
successful, an allowance must be
regular and in line with a child's
activities and abilities.
Birds and Bees?
Did you hear abotit the boy who
went to the bookstore to learn
about the birds and the bees? He
"How to Hug." He sneaked it
into his room, locked his door and
then discovered that he wasted .
his money. The book was the 6th
volume of the Encyclopedia.
Stamp Collecting
Stamp collecting is really a
wonderful interest. Remember
those hours you spent over a hot
teakettle, steaming the stamps off
envelopes? With Mom right
behind you steaming open Pop's
letters?
Fishing?
The boss is mad today. It seems
his wife asked him if he
remembered all those trout he
was fishing for last summer. He
said: "yes", And she said: "Well
one of them called up here last
night and left her number."
