RE BYLAW GRANTING EXEMPTION FROM TAXATION FOR A PERIOD OF TEN YEARS. We desire to remind you that a vote of the electors of the Town of Goderich will be taken on Monday next, the 22nd try of July, 1918, to obtain their assent to above-named bylaw. We take this opportunity to give a few particulars which may prove of interest to you, relating to our business, and which we feel sure will enlist your support of the bylaw which is about to be voted upon. When we purchased the property known as the "Doty Engine Works" in March, 1917, the plant had lain idle for a period of nine months, so that the workpeople, tradesmen and others in the Town of Goderich derived no benefit whatsoever during this period of idleness. Immediately after completion of purchase we inaugurated business on a much more extensive basis than bad hitherto been carried on at the salve works, and entered into contracts for the building of Marine Engines and Boilers for Stearn Trawlers to be used on patrol work iu the North Sea. We have also built a number of large 1-I10-H.P Engines for Cargo Ships Doty under construction in Canada for the British Government under the direction of the Imperial Munitions Board. In addition to the benefit derived from our operations by the townspeople and workmen of Goderich, it can cer- tainlxbe claimed that we are doing work of vital importance and materially assisting in this time of national stress, when "hips are so badly needed to protect our shores from the enemy, and to carry foodstuffs to England and her Allies. At the present time we are building Engines for both Trawlers and Cargo Boats, and have on hand orders for a nttmIrr of Scotch Marine Boilers for Trawlers. It has come to our knowledge that criticism has been made during the past few days in respect to our laying off r of hands in the Boiler Shop, and it has been stated that this is on account of shortage of work, and that the a a plan getting into a similar position as at previous times in its history. !.i There is no foundation whatsoever for such statements. \Ve have had orders for boilers in our hands for three months sufficient to keep the plant fully occupied for nine months, and numerous invitations to take on more work. 1 It is perhaps not generally known that all steel entering into the construction of ships' boilers comes from the United States : not one ounce is rolled in Canada. The consequence is we are entirely dependent upon the goodwill of the United States in procuring our supplies. That country is engaged upon a vast shipbuilding programme of its own and naturally looks after its own interests first. A permit has to he obtained from the United States Shipbuilding Board before any steel can be exported, and delay in securing this permit has caused a temporary cessation of our work, a cause entirely beyond our control arising out of war conditions, and which necessitated the recent laying off of a few of our been. We kept them ou the payrolls for a considerable period at great expense, but the time arrived when, seeing no immediate prospect of securing the necessary steel, ve could not in justice to ourselves retain thecal any longer. Happily the difficulty in this respect is in course of being removed, and we hope at 'a very early date to increase the number of our employees. During the short time we have operated we have paid in woes the_sluu .xf 1121— ta for ry local snpplks tbe sum of 56,500.00 and for electric euergy 1,t100.t14 peer sed the • The vote be to confirm d from nmgnicipal taxation foment made r ahe Town period of Council yeatrs (except schoot'taxes), subject, prop- erty whereby we were to be P We are not asking, as has been the custom on several past occasions, for any money bonus or the guarantee of however, to the consent of the ratepayers. our bonds, tout -simply for freedom from taxation.
