'DEPUTATIONS AT OTTAWA
Counter Delegations Present Views en
the Tariff Pu..tlon
Free wheat. flour, potatoes, cement
acd lumber and agricultural imple-
ments were demanded from the
government by the graln-growers of
the west and representatives of the
Dominion Grange from the Province
of Ontario who waited on Premier
Borden and the cabinet at Ottawa.
The case for the farmers was pre-
sented In a memorial read by Ur.
Roderick Mackenzie. It set forth that
under present conditions the farmers
of the west were unable to make ends
meet. They were restricted by the
tariff, they claimed. to the Canadian
routes. and the Canadian railways had
entered Into combines with the lake
and ocean carriers, which absorbed
the profits of the grain -growers be-
tween the w)eat field and the British
ports.
This deputation was followed by an-
other, consisting of fruit growers and
cattle men, beaded by Senator E. D.
Smith of Winona. The second dele-
gation stated that the farmers did not
want and should not have any lower -
tug of the present protective tariff.
That the fres entry of foreign fruits
would be the death knell of the fruit
industry in Niagara summarised the
argument of J. R. Hastings of Winona.
The Premier said that all the sub
jects presented would be given care-
ful consideration.
COUNTERFEITERS CAUGHT
They Had Extensive Outfit and Were
Prepared For Slept
An entire gang of c- ounterfeiters was
taken Into custody near the village
of Lavaltfe, Que., by Provincial and
Dominion police. The men arrested
are Batholomew Caron, Frederick
Eaton, Edouard Pariseau, Philip Bous-
quet, Eugene Gagne and Alfred
Greiner, the latter an engraver In the
employ of The Herald Publishing
Company of Montreal.
Besides the arrest of the six men
the police seized a most elaborate
counlerfeltfng plant, including a print
tag press, plates, specially prepared
paper and everything necessary for
the counterfeiting • of United States
tendollar gold certificates.
The farmhouse where the gang
operated was fitted up like an arsenal.
Shotguns and revolvers, with plenty
of ammunition, were found, and the
gang evidently intended to put up s
battle had tfiey not been taken by
surprise. it Was before dawn when
the police reached the house. They
smashed down the door and rushed
Into the house with drawn revolvers.
and were upon the counterfeiters al
most before one of them could make
a move to get out of bed.
