R A couple of weeks ago we mentioned that there was an agitation going on to- ward. the formation of a company to build a railway from Lake Huron to Lake Ontario, the terminal point at this end being Goderich, aril the other being at Hamilton or some suitable place on Lake Ontario. Vie are pleased to know that the scheme has been taken hold of and is likely to assume practical shape This week we publish a notice of appli- cation for a charter by the company to the Ontario Legis:ature, and we also learn that a number of the most pro sinent residents of to me of the town, along the line hate been appointed un the directorate, the representation being as follows: -Goderich- Judge Toms, M C. Canercn, Q. C., J. T. Gamow, Q C., Joseph Williams, Horace Horton and Dr HolmHolmes- Blyth -P. Kelly ; Bruisely- I th( to y F. C. Rogers ; L•etowel - Mayor dee Bricker, J. C. Hay; and W. From our know- btu ledge of the men whc compnse the provisional directorate we feel. prepared T to state that there is every reawn to he- En hers in the emu Ji.fa of the scheme. We shall watch with interest the aneoes or other- wise of the Holstein as handled os the average farm of our own province, where fancy feeding is not the role. That nag Is so accustomed to receive vigorous prod- ding Chit it can scarcely doubt that it is not in settee but in grim earnest that the joking Josiah is ahuvirg it beyond its gait and even to the astonishment cf its friends. The Bessie lettere have turned out to be the beet sell in the shape of political literature penned for many a day. The mask was so neatly fitted that only a small number cotitd penetrate the disguise until the last let- ter was written, and some are still in doubt. Mr Bemis is a deli3htful lite- rary and political fraud, and must chuckle over the manner in which he has silverly deceived both side] in his well simulated Quixotic screeds. Ir the State moat provide hangmen, they should be of the beat. If the sheriffs do not want to do the job them- selves, let them have their proxies prac- tise on dummy figures until the success of the dreadful act is assured. When the le' says , man must die at • certain hour by a certain mode why not permit the d;,om- ed man to help to make his exit as easy as possible, rather than trust to the hand of an ignorant and unfeeling wretch who, in this laneo case, must have had more of the murderous instinct in him than the unfortunate fellow whose 0rer- retined sentiment, compelled hitm, fr.,m e and not hate, to take the lives of lee he loved not wisely but certaiuly ply l If the gallows dues not go as t de of public execution, then the nderipg amateur hangman must. leofficial count is Brogue gland a majority of 160 vote&Sues Mr he receipts for the 'eason on the eau and Ottawa Couple were $43, - as compared with $36,345 last on- "Why need It he r weeny, and sigh When losing mothers fadand die. GODEYICH, Nov. 37,h, 1889 To the Editorial TIM Stang . DIAN Sta.-A County Poor House has long been considered by many a netes. any ; efforts from time to time to secure one have, we understand, been made in the County Council, always resulting sc far in failure. The realm alleged is the assumed hostility of the rural municipel- :ties, to which, if it elicits, their repre- sentatives in the Council very properly defer. We are much inclined to think, however, that what is allot hostility IS largely, if not solely, smithy and Ind, encu, and possibly as to acme, of the actual facts ; easily removable if a few earnest friends of the scheme would give it a little of their time and atten- tion. With this idea, and feeling thtt some one most take the initiative, a meeting of the local clergymen was held at Gode- rich recxrtly to consider the matter, when it was resolved that •• ell,rt should be made to obtain the active co- operation of the clerrynien and of other citizens philanthropically inclined throughout the County, to help forward the scheme. May we ask for your earn set assistance in this good work i Many of the Reeves, we are informed, are •I ready favorable Inhere, we feel sure, would be personally in favor of it if they felt that their course would be justified by their people.
