itirht Hon. lair John Maeduadd,
B.. was present a1 the session .4 the
Imperial Confederation amterence.whieh
was re -opened by adjournu•ent today.
11. object ..f the meeting was further to
discus. the practioshility •.f a scheme of
federation of Britain pool her colonies,
which was broached and partly delisted
at the 'netting held Isere a few weeks
ago, The occasion, rim
today wss, as On
Ike formeoccasion,large and iutluen-
tial, comprising representatives .1 near-
ly all the colonies and a large number of
Liberal and Conservative peen and cum -
tanners.
Right Hou. W. E. Eimer spoke in
favor of a motion declaring it expedient
to establish an Imperial Federation
Imeffett. The objects of the League were
deigned to be the knitting together..( the
various parts of the Empire fur defence
and for the furtherance of mutual iu-
tereets, but t.. vcarantee all existing
rights • ver local ,Hain to each cnututu-
ity.
Sir John 111aafonald agreed heartily
with all the remarks an.l argumelits used
by Right Hue. Mr. Forster in support
the movement, and he himself sup-
ported it with all his strength. He
edified to the loyalty •,f the Canadian
Dominion to the British connection, and
nlari:ed upon the benefits the Dominion
h3d trained through the existence of that
connection. This ioipi rant movement
toward Federation, he said. threw upon
he Coiontal Governments the responsi-
bility of considering the whole question.
Mr. Forster's motion win, after spirit-
ed discussion, adopted.

The Lemma (lase.
Mr. Allison, the Liberal memher
lwa.ox, has been unseated because of
corrupt practiw on the part of agents,
rad this gives the (';t,: ,. a season of
oyfulneu. Probably on the theory that
Emery loves eompauy, and the fact that
year sine Sir John Mleclonall was un-
seated in this very constituency for
hulesale bribery and corrnpti.•n through
agents. .ur contemp.rary rejoices that a
Liberal member has lust his sea! on lite
same count. For oar part we have no
old of extenuation to offer in defence
of corruption or bribery id any kine', and
even in the fact that Sir John Macdonald
was unseated for similar offences can find
no extentlaticn of the eonduet .,f th.,ae
who in the presort case pretended to
act in the Liberal cause. Nu ratan who
aces Liberal principles. or who seeks the
permanent success .d a Liberal candidate
will resort through misguided zeal to
ways which are indefensible There is
only one cure for brit.ery, and that is im-
prisoometit, and we true► the day will
come when on the statute books of this
eountry there will be a law permitting
the imprisonment of bri►.en whether -
Tory or Grit-wathoat the option of a
. Bribery is the root of the great
tams of political evils which curse every
ntry with representative institutions,
.d the evils it bean iu its train. are to

of the law in their repression. --(Ottawa
